hahah. im having a starter problem to. The mounting bracket on the chev's starter keeps braking off( where you put the bolts thru). I just bought a gear reduction starter and seems to be holding together. I havent tested the thing thru mud or water yet but i hope i dont get your problem aswell

Is it the same as the hilux / 3f style starter? If so whip it out and open it up and have a look. The contacts are probably burnt up. Less than $20 in parts and you'll have it good as new. Last time I did mine I made the contacts from some copper water pipe ( was somewhere remote when it failed )

If you've been playing in mud/water it may be that the spring-loaded backing plate has wedged in the end cap of the contact housing. Tap with a hammer, lube with Lanox, stuff some packing in the end cap so it doesn't happen again. All Fixed.
