New Yota Project

Ok as stated in general chit chat i bought a 82 hilux

it needs motor, gear box transfers and then it will be a runner has most interior but i dont plan on using most of it

here is the plan

March 82 Hilux RN46 it is
MK1 2L Diesel
G52
Forward Shifting Case
AA Dual Case Adaptor
Top Shifting Case with 4.7 Gearset
Mazda Rear Springs
IFS Rear Housing
Bobbed At Shackles
Short Tray
Track Bar
Toy Rears In Front
2in Dropped Hangers 1" Forward
4.88 Front With ARB Air Locker - hy pinon if i can find 1
4.88 Rear With Spool
IFS Hub Spacers On Front
Longfields
4 Point Internal Roll Cage
4 Point Harnesses (seatbelts)
Bucket Seats from some import rice bucket
Cross over using double welded arm (for meantime till hysteer)
Think it can be done for $10,000 ?
Can i get it done b4 round 2 XRCC :roll:

will be built to accomodate 37" MT/Rs or 38" TSL / TSL SX down the track

So are you looking for opinions as to wether you are doing this right or wether it can be done in the time or for the money you stated?

i will be doing everything bar the welding like - suspension / shock mounts and most certanly not doing the cage - the cage will be one big cost

OK i have a few questions.

Why a set of 4.7s as well as a dual case?
Why 4.88s if you plan on running a dual case as well as 4.7s?
Why an internal cage?
And the biggest question why a 2.4L deisel?

Ok they may be not that much more expensive but where are you going to need a dual case and a 4.7 gear set?

Ok so you have the 4.88s. With dual cases and 4.7s the Deisel wont be able to rev enough to use any of the 4.7 gears. So you have just wasted money on a gearset that you could have spent money else where.

IMHO an internal cage is not worth shit in a rig that is going to be wheeled hard. You are just going to trash pannels all the time.

So when you need wheel speed to get up an obstical how is a 2.4 deisel going to perform. I cant see you getting out of second double low and trust me there is not enough wheel speed in second. You are going to need 3rd or 4th and the deisel wont cop that. They are a gutless eneimic piece of shit that are only good for the fact they run on angles

dont be so harsh on yourself

for the motor the only other consideration i have made is the 4L lexus but what manual box do i run behind it?

i know what you are saying on the exo / internal cage argument - the only exo i have ever liked is the tin benders on the green 4 runner below

diffs maybe you are right - swap to a 4.5 / 4.3 where hy pinons are easier to find for the front and get one for the back

Bubs RUFF is right!!

You may have heard from other "Rockcrawling EXPERTS" that deisels are the Shait!!

BUT THEY ARE NOT!!

NOT FOR WHAT YOU WANT IT FOR!!!!

For rock hopping, crawling whatever you want to call it you need power at the ready, meaning when you hit the GO PEDAL, IT GOES!!!

Now i now i can't talk with my pissy 3Y but it has instant power (well as much as it can) unlike a deisel where it will sit there and wind up!!!

Twin cases and a 4.7 gear set!

Once again what ruff said is spot on!

Save you money and instead of a 4.7 gearset get a 3.5 ROVER V8!

If a poxy little deisel is as great as what some experts say then why is it that RUFF and I are both heading down similar tracks!

4.4l V8 with duals and 4.1 diff for RUFF (i think)

3.5l V8 with duals and 4.3 diffs for me!

YOU WANT A ROCK HOPPER, well how many of the GOOD U.S guys are running deisels and 300:1 ratio, they all run a decent V8 and about 130:1!

I dont beleive the commodore V6 is worth the swap as they wont lug down under 1000rpm as the computer cant control the engine at that.

The Lexus is a big and expensive job.

The rover is readily available and cheap and almost bolts straight in with the right adapters which will set you back around $500.

A good second hand 2L deisel will cost you $1800-00 min. I have just looked around for one.

i drove a 2wd hilux (work one) with the 2.7 and was quite impressed with its power - also have driven a new v6 4wd - not worth it very dissapointed with the power had stock 255/70's

How much did you pay for the hilux?


$350 - no motor, gearbox transfer or diffs, missing bonnet and seats has front and rear housing and drive shafts

but has absolutley no rust and the cab is straight

even if it had motor etc the only thing staying would have been the top shift case

It will almost bolt straight in but the wiring needs to be custom.

What put me off was the cost. I found an engine that had all the accessorys on the L?H side of the engine totaled in an accident and they wanted $1800-00 the parts to repair were another $2500-00.They wanted $4500-00 for a complete engine with a bellhousing and wiring and computer.

4 runner is not being wrecked - returning to stock

diffs out in the spare pile for 4.88

other ratios i will have track down and buy :?

my diesel has plenty of power on demand, and when you are talking about getting in high gears, guys, im running bigger tyres, and less gears so my first or second low is like you guys in 4th or 5th :shock:

Diesels are okayy for wheeling and general driving. Especially look at what bubs drives atm, and unless his future progression is towards what we are doing then a diesel will do him fine.

A lexus is cheaper than a commode, and better, its also cheaper than a 2.7L by the sounds of it. BUT the Rover/Leylands are dirt cheap.
