Hi, I am thinking about one of the cheap compressors for my garage.
Are the small cheap ones with a 20lt enough to run a rattle gun and maybe a spray gun or do you need 35lt or 50lt tank?
Would the super cheap one be a waist of money?
Cheers

I got one of their 2.5HP units and it seems to go fine.
Have used it with the rattle gun a few times but haven't tried a spray gun.

The supercheap compressors are fine for home use but get the biggest tank you are willing to pay for. It's a real pita when you're trying to paint something and the compressor has to kick in and out every few minutes.

To run a rattle gun it should be fine - but a spray gun may have trouble.
When we resprayed my car, we had a 50 and was not nearly enough to cover a full panel with decent pressure.
We ended up fixing the in house industrial compressor which had not been run for 10 years.
As chimp said, just buy the biggest you can for the amount of $$$ you can justify.

MMmmm good point.
The other thing Im thinking about is the space it takes up in the garage.

For your first setup they are ok, rattle gun goes ok, all the rest work pretty well, it will keep you out of trouble

i have a small and cheap air comp. mishy bought it for me for christmas
what a girl!
it's fantastic for air tools and inflating tyres. i have no plans to spray with it so it's ideal for my needs. it's small and light so it's easy to move around and can sit in the corner when i don't use it. i spent more than the compressor cost on tools and air line.

small ones work ok but ive cracked the block on mine im guessing from over use as its always had oil in it its also got that much blowby that i recon it pushes more air out the oil filler than it does into the tank
i run a rattle gun off mine lots and its fine with a decent hose not the crappy plastic coil hose ive spraypainted a few panels on my brothers car only in primer and its not too bad
i found best is to ajust the pressure switch so it cuts in earlier mine cuts back in at 95psi and off at 115 wherees factory they drop to 70psi befor ehte compressor turns back on again

I reckon I paid $100 for mine about 3yrs ago. And back then I used to change wheels every 2nd week with the rattle gun no problems. And since I am slack and dont repair leaks in tyres it has pumped up alot of tyres also and still going strong.
I think there good value. I also brought the airtool box ($99 at the moment), which had the rattle gun, air wrench, air hammer (great for removeing stubburn bolts) and a couple of other accessories..

I have the same kit and the it works well, it is all you need if you are just starting and cheap enough to not matter. By the time you wear the stuff out you will know what brand of rattle gun you want

I used the $98 supercheapy compressor and the supercheapy starter kit (expect to spend more on the fittings though!) to respray my car and found it quite sufficient. I have a shorty though, so the panels aren't really that big. I was waiting for the compressor a bit, but it wasn't annoying.

About 2 years back I bought a nice big garage compressor.....and it's been great...17cmf & 80L tank.....But now I have the York OBA, well I hardly use the garage compressor....Infact if I had the OBA first I wouldn't have bothered with the garage compressor....
Just a thought

Me too. I have a york for OBA with 2 air tanks, and many times I have used it instead of a garage compressor. I put up a 2m high, 16m long timber fence running an industrial nail gun from the york and never once ran out of air. Haven't tried spray painting from it though, may need a bigger tank for that.

I've got asupercheap 2.5hp 40lt compressor, as well as the supercheap rattle gun pack (rattle gun, air ratchet and air chisel) and I found that the regulator was too small. When running the air ratchet, after I stopped I could hear the hose refilling. So I bought a decent regulator and it has improved the compressor immensely. I have also added a water trap, and bought decent airhose. (an industrial hose supplier is cheaper than supercheap for that.)
Keep in mind that the longer the hose the better, provided it has adecent internal diameter, not the coily craphose that they come with! (it acts as a tank). I've got 50m of hose
I've had my compressor for two years, and it has had heaps of use. However, with what I have spent all up, I could have bought a new industrial grade compressor, with decent reg, water trap, oiler and tools. I've seen packs like this at Nubco (an industrial tool and steel merchant) with a v twin compressor, belt drive (which means you can replace the motor quite cheaply), comes with ratchet, rattle gun, die grinder, air chisel, drill, hose and fittings for about $650 on special.
That said, At that price I couldn't have justified the price, but the way I have done it I have got a similar setup that I was able to spend $50 here and there.
Cheers, Dean

I rang a 4 bunnings stores on the way home tonight in Melb.
3 said the 40lt comp was $199
The 4th in Eltham had his shit together and said that the new delivery due in the next couple of days will be $98 because the 20lt 2hp are not available and they were instructed to sell the larger one for $98

Most painters will say at least 10CFM for spraypainting without running out of air. I have a 2.5 hp 40ltr tank el cheapo from mitre 10 (same as gmc /sc etc) and it does all i need.
