Was looking at this recently as well, and dont see any reason not to get the newer transformer type coil, bosch 1 i am looking at is the GT40RT, it is listed for the mavs and patrols, so will hopefully just bolt in without new holes.

http://www.bosch.com.au/content/language1/html/2250.htm

have a look here at the ignition coils PDF, they claim stuff like fatter spark, lower current draw with higher output, blah blah blah.

yes, i noticed that, it does specify in the PDF that the R in the GT40RT means that it is for use with a ballast resistor.

P.S. is that the white rectangle thing next to the coil? what does it do?

Yes, the ballast resistor provides the proper voltage to the coil.

My cousin had the transformer type in his race car and blew it up. He went back to the oil filled coil. It was only a little formula Vee.

I had a Crane PS40 oil filled coil on my GQ. It eventually developed a slow oil leak. I replaced it with a Bosch GT40RT and have had no dramas with it so far after 6 months.
Had to drill 1 new hole to mount it. No big deal.
Dont expect mere proof to sway my opinion.

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know what the secondary resistance should be on a bosch GT40R?

I have one that is reading 16,000 ohm and I think this is way too high. Am I right?
