Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Guys, I am ready to purchase a 3 inch system for my 03 GU TD6 wagon. I have had a look at the GU bible and found some great posts re the same topic....I have done bit of a ring around local exhuast places and also included 'Exhaust Fix in Lillydale VIC' who were recommended in the bible. I found out the following and also need some answers from you.
1/. Exhaust fix were the most recommended and best price by far ($680 fitted). Can anyone recommend a place in NSW that thye have dealt with.
2/. An exhaust mob in my local area wanted $850 but they use mandrel bends as they don't bend 3 inch.
3/. If you don't want a 3" dump pipe fitted I believe that the factory pipe is cut leaving about 1 inch so that the 3 inch system can be fitted up. I am concerned about this as it is a restriction but have been assurred it makes bugger all difference as the old is a bit over 2.5 inch diameter anyway. I know you can fit 3' dump pipe for a cost but whats the point if it is hardly any difference?
4/. I am told you don't need a big muffler as the turbo absorbes most of the noise?? And then I'm told if you don't fit a big muffler you'll get alot of thrumming noise in the cabin in the wagon.

Anyway I am a little confused so any input would be of benefit to me re the points above. Thanks heaps, CJ.

I have driven Morkz TD6 which was done by Exauhst Fix but found it to loud without a muffler. I did some research and found the best thing to use is a balance chamber resonator, this reduces the turbulance created from the turbo therefore reducing the noise, it does not affect the flow of the gases so no loss of power. Also bought a MTQ cast dump housing and when the factory one was removed there is a significant difference the outlet diameter, if you were to go 3 inch i would suggest a new dump housing.

I have just made and fitted my own 3 inch mandrel bent systen to a TD6 which cost under $500, this includes double SS flex joint, MTQ cast dump housing and the resonator.

Had the vehicle on the dyno last week before the mods and it produces 78kw running 305's, will have it tuned tomorrow and post the results.

Sourced the 45 and 90 deg bends from a local truck component supplier for $18 each and flanges from an exhaust place. Also bought a length of 3 inch tubing which was cheaper than buying it by the meter.

It required cutting, tacking the bends and tubing to ensure the position of the system cleared the chassis. I tried to follow the original position as close as possible. It took a bit of time to get it right but I enjoy this stuff and saved me money. You will need a mig welder to do it, a stick welder does not handle the thin wall all that well.

The dump pipe will cost approx $220.

i dont have a problem with my exhaust noise and yes the muffler doesnt affect performance.

But just make whoever builds your exhaust that you a number of joins my exhuast is made up of 3 parts so should i smash a particular section its easier fixed or if i need to put the factory system back on i can just bolts back on

u have this on the Merc now?

I have the same 3" system as Morkz and to confirm, it does not droan or have thumping noises.

It sounds a bit louder at low revs under acceleration, but when your up and going I can hardly hear it. My mudders make more noise. But i like it that way, especially hearing the turbo spool up......
A muffler can always be easily fit between the flanges if needed.

I towed a tandem trailer with 300 metres of cyclone fencing with my 4.2 and it was fantastic. Going up hill sitting on 100k in fifth gear and i was overtaking cars.

Get it done, then stick it on a dyno to adjust the fuel and turbo....you'll love it.....
