Outer Limits 4x4 Board

today was driving, and car died.
this had happened before so i checked the ignition fuse and sure enough blown.
fair enough, shit happens, put another fuse in, zap. gone again.
bugga.
so later on tonight, i connected a wire straight from coil to battery +ve, disconnected any other wires leading to the +ve of the coil.
still no go, connected the wires back up, put a fuse back in, still no go.
took out spark plug, no spark.
im thinking stuffed coil, and was on the way out when it was blowing the fuses.
anyone got some thoughts

hi it is a dissy with points you are talking about? sounds like the condensor to me or the wiring has shorted or like you said the coil but the condensor is cheaper than a coil and what i think it is.

anyone else, im hopefully putting in another coil today, should it matter that its off a 120y and not a sierra?
this condenser you talk off, im guessing its the little thing that comes off the coil about 1cm diamter thingy?
what does it actually do?

The condenser is another name for a capacitor, and your coil is an electrical transformer.

An ignition coil creates a collapsing magnetic field when the current in the primary coil is suddenly stopped. This collapsing magnetic field induces a huge voltage in the secondary coil, which makes the spark in your spark plug.

The collapsing magnetic field in the primary coil also tries to keep the current flowing in the primary coil, which causes sparks across your points contacts and burns them out in one hell of a hurry. The condensor creates an alternative path for this arcing current, and helps protect your points contacts.

If your condensor doesn't work properly you can have miscellaneous ignition problems, but I wouldn't have expected blowing fuses. Which is not to say it couldn't happen.

with out your condensor you will find your car won't run, replace it first as they are cheap.

my hilux was blowing the ignition fuse due to a short in the reverse light circuit

fixed it,
it was the coil on the way out,
found a coil in the shed from and old 120y stuck her in and she goes like a dream!
