Outer Limits 4x4 Board

have 1985 classic range rover with NO brakes (do not drive in front of me at any time) failed rego brake test twice (only pasted due to going up hill at the time, would of stoped any way)

repairs so far

new rotors times two (front)
new wheel bearings (not to loose?)
new pads all round (nice and soft)
new brake lines (braided up front 3 inchs longer)
new master cylinder
bleed many many times
pedal as hard as ahoneymooners d@#$

can any one help before it is to late

What about the vacuum booster?

With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times to use up the vacuum left in the system.

Then hold the pedal down with your foot and start the motor. You should notice the pedal (and your foot) go down as the manifold vacuum increased.

sorry had check vacuum booster it does work (one of few things that do)

what brand or quality of pads did you fit?
do they need bedding in?
Did you clean the new rotors before install to remove film of rustproofing?
a few things to try,best of luck.

If you are sure the booster is OK, the only thing you have not checked are the calipers.

First though I would disconnect the booster line and plug the hole to the plenum. Then go for a SLOW drive and see how different the brakes feel. You will only have to brake once to know. If its the same its your booster.

To check the front calipers, put a set of dead pads in then get someone to brake gently while you look into the caliper. Do both sides come out? One may come out first until it hits the pad but the other must come out. Were the pads evenly worn, IE both pads worn the same? Sometimes the inside of the flexible hose comes to bits and blocks the passages in the caliper. New flexible hoses do not fix the problem because of the crap in the calipers.

I bet on the booster. It happened to me on my old car . Every now and then I would brake and nothing. Yikes!!

Check proportioning valve.

These some times stuff up and no brakes or very inefficent brakes.

With the calipers off and you push the peddle, do all the pistons extend?
