Got pulled over last night in surfers, no roof and no doors, it was great fun. Then a cop pulled me over and asked me where my doors were and i said that they were at a mates place and told them i could put them back on. They asked me why i took them off, and i said that they come off from factory and they said ok put them back and goodnight. No fine no points. Phew.

I believe that the "federal office of road safety" or similar.... in any case, the peeps who set the ADR's, (God... for our purposes) can confirm, in writing, that it is perfectly legal to drive a zook with no doors on.... anywhere in australia. this is an ADR issue not a state issue. I believe it si becuse the doors were inteded to be removed. same goes for landy's and jeeps. There is no ADR mandated requirement for doors... hence the reason that Mini Mokes were and are legal... and so are motorbikes. :D

Hence I could also take the doors & front guards off my GQ anytime too then and be perfectly legal, if the factory did not intend for them to be removed they would have welded them on. :D

If a door has factory side intrusion bars, it cannot be removed.

Since zooks only coms standard with rust and dirt in their doors, then its perfectly OK for them to be taken off ;)

I can't see it being legal, Landrover doors came off by just lifting them off the hinges if you had the split pin out.
You can unbolt all the body & roof panels off a Range Rover too down to the floor pan and drive it around, doesn't mean it's legal.

Its not like me to insist something without having read it myself, but I can assure you it's true, The federal office of road safety has A 1-800 number for help with ADR questions. They have consultant engineers on call who go through the ADRs and accurately answer these sort of questions for automotive engineers, state govt's police etc. Call them and find out for yourself. One of our club members who regularly drives doorless has the piece of paper in his glovebox for chance encounters. I have seen the document with govt type letter head etc but haven't read it.

This is the same club member who called the 1-800 number to confirm that it is not illegal to paint you car flat black - there is no ADR covering exterior colour.

It's easy to be intimidated without the correct information, and there's no reason as all of these urban myths can be resolved by calling these people.

I'm so not winding you up, this is legit.

just to follow up on that paint thing - does this mean a chrome car is legal? cos while it would get dam dirty - it would be pretty awesome!!!

You'd have trouble finding a chroming tank big enough.
All of the above is great info, thanks Gwagensteve.

Does anybody know this 1800 number?
I would be interested in seeing the letter as the doors aren't designed to be removed, they are bolted on just like any other car.

There are ADR's relating to side intrusion specs, whether a Sierra has to comply with these is another thing

I think there would also be issues with things like restraining limbs in the event of a rollover and such.

yeh i was told by the DOT that if my TJ jeep has a build date before the 6th month 1997 then i can run it without the doors, because that is when some law was passed to do with side intrussion bars.

Same been looking thru to. Would like to find out for sure tho.

A question for jcianci, did you have any side mirrors still on ur rig when you drove with the doors off? Like mounted off the body?

Bingo, we have a winner folks.

I have had my Zuk roadworthy, inspected, pulled over defected etc for many things but doorless has never been an issue AS LONG AS I have had both side mirrors attached to the body of the vehicle in a permanent way and they both had to be functional in their location.

Removing doors is only illegal if they form a safety factor ie side intrusion bars, air bags etc but all other safety item s like mirrors must remain

speaking of door removal... how did we all get them off in the first place?

both a mechanical and hammer driven impact driver still refuse to budge mine!!!

When I got my 1.6, SPOA, supension mods and 33" tyres engineered I asked the engineer about the legalities of going "doorless", his opinion was, (and still is) that as long as I refitted the mirrors to the body it was all good, in the last 4 years or so I would have had the doors on for 3 months max, right now it has the doors off and the windscreen down
(and all you smart arse's, save your Victorian weather jokes, I have heard them all before :D ).
It is very hard to argue a point with a copper if you don't have it in writing, in front of you, and he will more than likely book you for something else anyway :?
Peter.

I used a FBH and a cold chisel or alternatively a 4" grinder worked well too as I happened to have spare bolts

I tried that and it only pushed the panel in.. I ended up using a grinder.

I think the previous owner used locknut on it.

Would the whether make a difference in how tight it is?

it wasn't the previous owner, Suzuki puts a thread sealer on in the factory

Back to the doorless topic, does anyone know where to get this in writting from? Or has anyone found an exact link? Would be helpful to a few if anyone has stumbled across it. And why would you wanna drive around with no guards??? :?
Cheers Dan
