How long have people found them to last before major problems?
I've read that they are not a long lasting engine and mine is coming up to 250000 so i'm starting to wonder how long its got.

Should be strong for another fehundred thousand yet! Maybe do a rebuild in 50 to 100k! Apart from that..ok!

Depends on service history. I got 230 000 before I biffed it. But it was a jappa and I suspect that the k's were wound

depends on the service history and the abuse history. if it hasn't had fresh oil every 5000km it can severly shorten its life because the oil gels and clogs internal pasageways especially in the oil cooler and galleries to the head. however by far the bigges killer of these engines is high combustion temperatures - if yours is still running it's not too late to fit up an EGT gauge - but if it has been run hard, and if you ever notice the temp gauge creeping up on hills or on the highway, chances are the combustion chamber temps are too high - the effects include cracked and dropped fragments of precombustion chambers, dropped valve seats, broken valve stems, head cracks, occasionally melted pistons. if you wind the boost up too far without intercooling, you can crack the rings and melt the pistons as well as all those other bad things. the big end bearings are also marginal and should be replaced every 100,000km just to be on the safe side.
cheers

Yeah servicing is important, I used to run about 7 pound boost but now I run nine, they say 10 is about the maximum. It also depends on your engines condition, with nine pounds boost i get good power and my engine works more thermally efficent than before.

I'm doing the oil every 5-7k, and try not to over work it. Boost is running to about 11, although thats where the guage i used to test it stopped so it could be higher.
Have a feeling that its not putting out as much power as it should be. Is intercooling beneficial to engine life?

you really need to do the oil every 5k, religiously. indirect injected turbos soot up their oil badly. intercooling (or anything that reduces exhaust/combustion temperatures) is good for engine life.
