Auto hubs on GQ, are they good?

i have the opportunity to swap my auto hubs (which I prefer) for standard locking hubs.

Do the auto hubs give much trouble? I usually lock them manually if doing a lot of 4x4ing, I only use them as auto's occasionally. what are others experiences with them?

Havent had a problem with my auto's yet, and like them as I am too lazy to get out and lock manual ones.
If the manual ones are a good brand, I'd get them if you do serious wheeling though, just for peace of mind.

auto hubs - absolutely nothing wrong with them offroad as long as you manually LOCK them.

reason why?

auto hubs - goin up a steep hill and then select reverse to go back can apparently 'disengage' which makes it very dangerous.

But puttin them on lock - they stay locked as in a normal manual freewheelin hub.

I changed mine to nissan manual lockin hubs so i could use the low range 2wd if i have to for reversing heavy trailers up driveways etc whereas a auto hub would lock in and then cause transmission windup.

id try to stay with geniune nissan lockin hubs over aftermarket..as ive exploded an aftermarket one once... :?

Really it comes down to whether you would like 2wd low range..

nice work Tom, did a good job of it

I prefer locking hubs, just like i prefer manuels for offroad work.
I like the control factor.

also as tom mentioned, i like being able to have Low 2 if i need it for trailers and things like that on the road

i would pull the auto hubs off , they are weaker than the manual locking ones . put on the factory manual ones you will have very few problems with them , i have only ever broken 1 factory one and we were able to repair it enough to keep going.

take the auto hubs out put put manual ones in
if i remember auto hub cost the earth to replace? over the manual hubs

speaking generally
i had the old jackaroo auto hubs when they screwed up every morning theyd lock emselfs in and you knew it when ya herd the zinging noise
stop pull over unlock em untill the next time i wanted to go somewhere else and in long run i were told it cost crap loads to fix em

The Nissan Auto hubs Lock in both direction..... never had a problem with them on my GU, if you are doing lots of hard core driving I would go with the manual hubs
