Anyone keen to shed light on a hilux on gas? Is it a good thing or more trouble than its worth?
I am looking at purchasing such a truck and would love some info if its around.
price is $10,500 with canopy and is pretty straight, needs some paint on roof with minor surface rust, new 31 rubber and rims. 280,000k's with an unknown engine reco in there somewhere....
For arguments sake, everything is original - what generaly goes on these things - general wear and tear or gearboxes and transfercases etc?

its very neat and straight, no new paint etc so u know its not full of bog/repairs

I have an 1989 4runner,
It has those EXACT specs at the moment... freaky
I cannot complain one bit about it... I've had it for 9months now and have had to do nothing but an oil change! And I've given it a pretty good work out...
The only thing I'd say to be careful of is the usuals:
- Gearbox/Clutch slips
- Check All gears H2, H4, L4, And if it's LSD check how it controls...
- Have a good listen before and after you've taken it for a test drive. sometimes those little rattles or noise only come out when the engine is hot...
- Check for chasis rust... feel right along the chasis rail
- Check back of Head/Power Steering rack/Box etc... for any area's that might have had oil wiped away
Just basically have a REALLY good look at everything that costs alot of money to fix... Take your time on the test drive (Tell him you want to take it to your mechanic or something... Give him your license... and even leave the keys to your car there so he feels safe about letting you take his car for a bit...)
As for the price, I picked up mine for 6K, but that was at an auction, I wasn't even looking at that truck which is why I put in some stupid bid that I thought would even make the reserve... I got lucky... It didn't make the reserve (9K) but the guy was in money troubles and neede to sell the car ASAP! I could sell mine tomorrw for 10K GUARANTEED!
Offer 9, you might get it for 9.5??? Hope that helps dude!

mmm...
Thats getting reasonable for sure... If your really serious, Find a mechanic that you know and get it up on his hoist...
That way you can pull one of the magnets out of the gearbox (Look for any metal shavings etc...), have a good look for any leaks anywhere and just shit like that to see if there is any forthcoming repairs...???
Or you could just pay the $150.00 smackers and get RACQ to do it for you. I've had a few mates who have done that and they seem to give it a pretty good going over...
