hi,

just wonderin what motors were available in the 60s and which are the good ones, and which arent so good (obviously none are bad as they are built by toyota! :P )

i had a drive of a petrol one today and was pleasently suprised, it wasnt quick or anything, but wasnt too bad.

thanks,
Shem

They had a 4.2ltr 2F petrol up to about 84-85 then they went to a 4.0 ltr 3F.
In the US they had a 3Fe fuel injected version from 87? but it didnt give all that much more power because of their anti pollution equipment.

They are all good motors but use fuel at 17-20 liters per 100 klms and wont stand high RPM for sustained periods.
A lot of owners run them on LPG to which they are well suited.

There was also the 2H diesel and its turbo cousin the 12HT.
Some other countries got the B diesel in a 60 series.

The 5 sp is much preferred to the older 4sp

cool thanks mate.

i would like a diesel, and there seems to be plenty around in the 60series. how hard is it to turbo chrage a 2H?

Also, what is recommended to be done to the suspension? just bang in some aftermarket leaves an shockers?

Smac You can turbo the 2H with some care. You need to keep the boost down and fit a gauge that monitors exhaust temp gases.
A better option is to fit the 12HT or buy a Sahara landcruiser .
A 12 HT will cost upwards of $6k for a good one but it is an easy fit

You could also fit one of the later 1HZ motors which requires the gearbox as well.
Fitting the 1HZ will give petrol like performance without the fuel bill.
Although there is a little more work.

The 12ht didnt only come in the Sahara plenty of g-packs had them,

The 12ht is the pick because of the piston shirt cooling, however get a good 60 with lower k's and if it comes with a 2h that hasnt been turbo'd i recon this is better than a 12ht that has been running with the turbo its whole life

my mate has turbod and intercooled his 2h and it goes awesome so torquey, chirps 35s with ease

cool.
i'm not after a speed demon or anything, but a little extra power always comes in handy.

Basically, im going to be selling my rangie, and hopefully i will have 10grand all up to buy a 4b and have some left over to spend on it.

Depends what you mean by acceptable. If I owned one from new and got 600,000kms out of it, it would be acceptable! Don't be scared to purchase one with 300+ kms since the 2H engine is under stressed (and under powered). As they say, they go for a long long time, thats because it takes a long long time to get there! My grandfathers 60 series has clocked up 330 thousand ks and he just put a turbo on it!
