Fitting 2003 IFS Rears to 1988 Rear on Hilux - Help Please

Hi Guys,
Me and a mate were trying to fit some 2003 IFS rear leaves into the back
of his 1988 4wd dual cab. We went to fit them up, and realised that the
new IFS springs have a bush pressed into the front eye with a metal
sleeve on the inside of it. Did the IFS springs come with a special front
pin? as the 88 hilux pin needs to be about 2mm shaved off it.
If so, where can I get some? Or do you have to lathe down the original
hilux pins?
Cheers,
Bart

We tried getting them out,
but it looks like they are attached to the eye of the leaf-spring somehow
and even if we did get it out, the eye of the spring appears to be bigger
to house this special rubber bushing.
To anyone who has fitted these springs, did your IFS leaves have
this large rubber bushing on the front eye??
What did you do to overcome it.
Cheers,
Bart

So you just knocked the rubber ones out completely?
Did you just beat on them? Cause it isn't a two piece bush
like the standard ones. just one solid rubber bush, with a
metal sleeve right the way through.
We tried hitting it, but it didn't budge one bit??
Maybe we should hit it harder with a bigger hammer!??
What do you reckon?
Cheers,
Bart

Take them to a mechanics shop and get them pressed out, either that or burn the rubber out with an oxy. Then use urethane bushes.

easiest to press them out. the bush is moulded in a steel sleave.

Once pressed out or whatever, is the front eye on the IFS leaves the same size ID as the front eye on the original leaves? Cause we are trying to re-use the urethane bushes in his truck already.
Cheers guys,
Bart

Joel,
I reckon you are running 60 series, cause the eye definately looks bigger by about 5mm or so.
Do you have any receipts or anything to verify which you are running?? I need to find out by next weekend so we can put this thing back together.
Can't I just use the original bush to save pressing the thing out in the first place?
The springs are brand new and the bush is in tip-top shape. What If I just buy a set of front bolts off an IFS model hilux?? then use the standard IFS bushes and pin in the 88 hilux mount?
C'mon all you toyo dudes out there, someone must have run into this issue before.
any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Bart

just cut the inside metal sleeve with a hacksaw blade, then pull em out takes like 10minutes and costs nothing!! then replace the bushes with the correct bushes, I think they take the standard bushes from a leaf sprung patrol, then you can use your original pin. Very easy to do!! and should only cost around $30 for a new set of bushes all round. check the DIY IFS rears topic. Cos you need to run extended shackles to, which means the bushes at the back may have to be different depending on the bolt size. If you can get your hands on some 18mm x 120mm 8.8 grade bolts it's easy as.

Push out the whole bush with a vice. You'll need a coupla short bits(3") of pipe- use a smaller diameter bit to push thru the spring eye- and use the larger diameter bit to create space to push the bush into.
The vice will need to be well secured tho because it takes a fair bit of pressure.
Then take the spring and your pin to supercheap and get the correct bush.
Bubs actually posted the correct part no. of the bushes from supercheap about 18 months ago.

I just tried, every search that I try comes back with URL Could Not be Found or something!! Can anyone remember what the part number
was?? Or can someone else try a search on the Toyota threads for it?
My mate will go and get some straight away.

Bart

Thanks bubs.
I don't know why my search ain't working?
I will order them for my mate tommorrow.
and get him to cut out the standard IFS front bush
with a hacksaw as he does not have alot of spare pipe to work with.
How much would it cost him for a mechanic to press them out roughly?
Cheers,
Bart

i dont see the trouble with tapping the bushes out yourself. i just sat the spring pack up off the grond on a few bricks, sat a socket over the bush, it was just the right size to hit the outer metal sleve, but fit though the eye in the spring.. sprayed it with some wd40 and wacked it about 5 times with a 4lb hammer. when i say wacked i mean i hit it, not tapped it.. and i had my foot on the spring pack to stop it bouncin around, i had shoes on 2. ahah wouldnt sugest thongs for this 1

Exactly as Slayer has just said. Position spring eye over some blocks of wood, get large size socket that will fit over metal sleeve around bush but will not hit spring eye. And WHAM! WHAM WHAM, til it pops out the bottom. Then go to your nearest motor parts store and get some bushes that are 40mm OD and 18mm ID. EASY!
BTW the bush at the rear of the spring, are the same as solid axle lux bushes.
