just readin the snake site and it says transfer mods are needed to install their crawler gears for hilux.. then i read marks site and his says no mods, the gears just swap straight over..

anyone give any insite either way.. snake one is 112% reduction and marks offer 2, one is 64%(3.7:1 or somthing) and the other is 4:1, they dont say what percentge this is..

what does it take to fit these to the tcase.. ? any specail tools or should i be takin the transfer out and droppin it at a gear shop for the day?

Yep

did a set of 6.1 in a zuk case and it is very easy, all u do is pull out the gears and place them all in a line then just reinstall them in the oppisite order.

Sounds so easy..... if you have the tools

hilux tcases normaly need the reducion housing to be ground out a little to allow for the larger diaeter of the lowrange gear set, with a decent set of instructions the installation is pretty easy if you have a good mechanical knowledge and tool box

I run rockhoppers in my lux they are 112% reduction which is 4.88 ratio.

I fitted them myself about 6 years ago. There was only about 3 or 4 other hiluxs with them then and they cost me $1500, now they are aprox $1000

The only specail tools you need are
die grinder
bearing/gear puller

With the rockhoppers since they are so low one of the gears is huge and there fore means that you have to grind off some of the inside of the t case. All I did was sat the gear where it goes and marked where the housing needed grinding then removed the gear and started grinding checking every so often untill I could sit a bit of cardboard on the gears and turn them all the way around with the cardboard going between the housing and the gear. While I was at it I also replaced all the bearings.

When I did this I had never seen inside of a t case nor had I even spoken to anybody about fitting them. I was smart thow and got another t case to put these into just incase I stuffed it up, once the gears where in I removed the origanl case and put the newly rebuilt one in. It was all very straight forward and simpal. The hardest is replacing the low range gear and bearings that are on the main input shaft (this is where the puller is needed).

Forgot I also had a hilux book to refer to for the little things like springs and the speedo drive gear locating ball etc etc etc etc.

seems this is the caser with the "rockhopper" gears, bein 112%.. or 4.88:1 as someone stated in this post. but the marks one is only 4:1 so the gear wouldnt be as big in dia and maybe fit without grinding away.. will give them a call 2morrow.

Just so you know, the grinding of the case was the easiest part of fitting them. I did this about 6 years ago and to date have not had any problems.

i suspected that would be the easy part. but if im goin to pay a shop to put the gears in it would be comforting to know they arnt hacking at my tcase with a grinder..
i do have access to all the tools id need and my old man could prob help me though it so i might give it a go..

if rockhopper ones are 112% and thats 4.88:1 then that makes the 4:1 marks ones a 91% reduction.. anyone confirm this?

Big balls also sell the rockhoppers, don`t know if they are, but wouldn`t be surprised if cheaper

I have the Marks low range gears and can confirm that they do not need any grinding to fit.
Not as low as the rockhoppers but a good ratio if you do a fair bit of sand driving (where you need momentum) as well as rock etc.
One day I will be fitting up the second transfer and adaptor that I have sitting in the shed so I have the option to go real slow

Put the marks 3.74 ones in mine, had never done a transfer before and didn't even have a book so it coudn't be that hard. Think they came with instrutions and I did have a press.
The others must be bloody slow.

been doin some more research here, looks like i can get the 4:1's in without grindin the case but now ive been told i may have to grind some meat off the fork/rail boss anyone confirm this??

Locktup do a 4.7 ratio kit,housing will require small amount of grinding.Price is very resonable.

Marlin Crawler do a compition set now (cromolly gear set). I would be looking into these for peice of mind. I think Locktup sell them. But nearly twice the price a standard set.

Very well priced, i bought the 4.7s from Locktup and had the transfer rebuilt with the gears by a transmission shop in Brisbane, whole exercise including gears set me back $850

Yeah I now have Locktups 4.70 gears in my new Lux.
Fairly easy to fit your self with good instructions.
You will need to grind a bit and you will need a press.

Mate i did the locktup 4.7 gears in my t/case about a month ago never pulled one apart before but it comes with very extensive step by step instructions its hard to go wrong.

All you need is a 4' grinder to clearance the bottom of the housing its fairly easy did it in a day.

Best mod ya can do for under $600 i recon so much control in low-range...

I've had the reduction gears in my 80, and also have them in my 60 now.
They are great. On occasion thou, the jump between low and hi range can be too large thou, sand driving for instance.

But in a hilux, wouldn't the double Tcase mod be a better option?
More gear selection choices and I assume a much lower ratio for the real crawly stuff.

Who has had both in their hiluxs and what do you think is better?

If u want gears at a good price go for the ones from LOW RANGE OFFROAD.
They are a 4.70:1 ratio Easy to fit all u have to do is grind out the bottom of the case with the 4". Put mine in this arvo Took me about 4 hours.
got them from the US cost me $482 Au including shipping.
