Slimming down... Putting the ute on a diet.

I recently bought a ute with a trayback and I want to slim the tray down to the width of the cab (about a foot overall).

Has anyone done this before?

I was going to cut a strip from the centre and join the two halves back together. The other option is to remove the tray sides, cut the floor, and reattach the sides (of course I still have to cut and weld the rear 'door'.

Ideas anyone??

Second option sounds better to me, but I guess it depends a little bit on how the whole thing is constructed.

second option means not having to redo the mounts to the chassis

Did the second option on mine (ally tray), sides for mounting dropsides were riveted on took them off and used a half worn cutoff disc in a circular saw to cutt floor on each side, then re welded the sides on. Trimmed rear drop side in the same way. Main hoop running above the cab took a piece out of the middle. Dead simple - except my ally welding was crap  and had to get that done properly.
Whole job took about 3 nights.
