Outer Limits 4x4 Board

There's not really a better place to put this thread that I could see!. I am looking into a mild ICE system to fit into my GQ.

I would like to put some nice speakers in the factory spaces in the doors, install at least an 8" roof mount dvd and have a removable sub fitted in the back.

Does anyone know what the standard speaker size is in the GQ ST? Is it 6" or 6.5"? What brand/model have ppl replaced the stock items with? They can't be too thick, because the window in the front door would hit them.

Does anyone have pics of installs that they could email me so that I can get some ideas?

does it have elec windows? Std speakers are nightmares.. you have to use spacers and shit to mount on...

no, its a 1990 GQ ST, no electrics. The window winder will hit the speaker if I space it at all. I am thinking of retrimming the doors if I have to, and relocating the fronts. The stock system is a crap location, that's for sure.

The standard speaker size is 6 inches I believe.

I took out the rear speakers and put them in the front with about a 2mm spacer becuase they were hitting the glass. I have pwr windows. The rear speakers are bigger than the front speakers, or at least they were in my 93 Mav.

I put in some deep 3 way 240 watt pioneer 6 inch speakers into the rear that I had already, they fitted fine, heaps of room.

Have placed some Pioneer 100w 3 ways with a 20mm spacer in my front doors.
The window winder clears by about 5mm.
Just took a bit of getting used to winding the window down.
Decent tunes out weigh the small inconvenience.

have sony explode 6" 3way 220w speakers in the front doors of my wagon
used a tapered spacer to mount them on .. get these from supercheap

i have 6x9s mounted in small boxes that i cramed in under the rear seat
with long cords to take out of the car while out camping for tunes
works awesome

I was pretty sure the speakers were actually 5 1/4" in stock form.

I had power windows so could use speaker spacers and go bigger, but you'd need a slimline 5 1/4" or 6" speaker in the fronts to clear.

There are a couple of brands that have a low enough profile to clear the winders but still have good grunt - ask Chimpboy what he did since he's a bit of a car stereo buff.

In the back of the SWB no issues - go big young man (just remember to have covers on if you're putting stuff in the back).

Can't answer about rear LWB doors.


I'm running panasonic 6" front and rear (not huge or especially loud but I love to listen to my extractors with the windows down) with Sony Xplode Motion Blade MP3 Unit.

PS I hate the sony thing like the plague and I wil NEVER EVER EVER buy another Sony unit (their speakers are ok though). All bling, flashing light and gimmicks, and very poor sound quality compared to my last JVC and Kenwood systems.

I said that last time when I bought a Sony for my Datto ute, but having been fooled twice it certainly wont happen a third time.

Pic s would be AWESOME so I can get an idea of how and why. I have thought about the spacers, but I don't think that I would have 20mm before I hit my window winder. THATS THE PROBLEM.

Anyway, the more ideas the better.

Have a set of Rockford Fosgate 6" Splits in my front doors (Tweeters are on the dash).

Can remember the model number, but they were a shallow mount, so you didnt need any spacers to fit into GQ.

Cost about 350.

there is a kenwood 2 way, and a kenwood 3 way speaker that fits into the front with no spacers, price wise they are about 75ish for the 2 way, and about 130 ish for the 3 way (last i looked).

P.S. more than likely anything you do get that has a grill over it will end up with knuckle gratings in them from that every so often that you try winding to fast and forget (speaking from experience OUCH!)

Pretty sure the kenwood slimlines were what chimpboy got for the front.

No grills is cool in the front but up the back if you're putting tool chests or eskys in the back then you want covering on them.

That's correct but I have since found several others that fit.

I really like Kenwood now though. I agree with what you said about Sony head units, too, since putting one in the gf's car. They are not crap performance wise, but they have these annoying features you can't switch off. Gimmicky rubbish.

Jaycar has a good deal on a Response 2x84W RMS amplifier at the moment - it's a genuine 2x84W, too, not just a number on the box. $139 I think, down from around $200. These are a really good unit. If you have a 4x50W head unit you can run four speakers of 5" or 6" diameter in the front doors and the rear footwell (or rear passenger doors in a LWB) then whack some bigger speakers in the back doors and drive them with that amp.

With the DVD screen, I don't know if I'd bother spending more than the $239 or whatever you can get a portable DVD player for now. I'd be really careful to place it in a spot that can't be seen from the driver's seat!
