hey..i have discovered a leak from the rear of my transfer case from my shorty gq mav... oil is draining out from between the handbrake cover and the backing plate.

im thinking that the rear output seal is buggered in the transfer case and needs changing. as i dont wanna pull everythig down to find out im over my head, whats involved in replacing this seal? is it a do at home job? any tricks? any help would be graetly appreciated...

also, should i be worried about the condition of the transfer case if it is leaking from this seal? everything works fine shift and selection wise...

looked into it some more..if i remove the tail shaft, handbrake plate, handbrake assemply etc i should get to the flange over the output shaft.. undo a big ass nut and tha flange should come off revealing the seal..

how does all this sound? the only problem i can invisage is doing up that big ass nut.. does it have to be a certain tension? does it have a set load or back lash or cone washers like some diff set ups or do i just do it up tight tight?? any help would be great.. cheers guys..

You need to remove handbrake drum and backing plate to access the transfer case rear seal. To remove the large nut, use a long piece of bar with holes drilled in it matching the spacing of the tailshaft studs to prevent flange from turning. I used a 3/4 drive ratchet to remove the nut--i think it needs to be tightened up to around 350Nm. Position new seal so it dosent run in the groove made by the old seal on the flange.

Just remove nut with a long handled 'T' bar. Truck in gear / handbrake on.
Release h/brake and chock wheels when loosed.
Needs to be done up as tight as you can.

Sometimes the surface on flange is worn, speedy sleeve will fix.
Use Nissan seal if you can, some aftermarket ones with spiral edge run wrong way and pump oil out.

Check which way shaft turns and ensure when seal fitted (spring inside) that IF it has a spiral mouded into lip it will wind oil in. Not all seals have a spiral.
