High Beams on 80 Series not working

My high Beams are not working. They used to be intermitent then they went through a stage when I could pull back on the stalk and they would turn on but when pushing forwards on the stalk to put them on permanently they all the headlights would turn off. Now they just dont come on at all.

I read on here that if you clean the little metal tag and ball bearing thing on the bottom of the stalk it may work again. Unfortunately this did not happen.

Does anyone know of another solution?

could the little module with the push switch for the highbeams be nackered? Besides the indicator wires, should some of the wires from the module have power when the high beam switch is on?

this does sound like your stalk is not making contact, normally when swiching to hi-beam it will cut power to low beam, but you will still have power to your park lights, if you want to try and fix old unit rather than new or wreckers. pull the shrouds off and see if you can see the contacts in action, may need to pull stalk unit out,, and check its operation and if the h/b contacts are touching, or if you make them touch with gentel pressure that the h/b come on. if it does come on, maybe try increasing the down pressure of the contact, with slight manipulation ;) good luck....

Get the multimeter out.....u should get 12v at the globes all the time and switched earth....if you dont have power, its a fuse...unlikely though....if you dont have earth on highbeams, its a buggered stalk.....or maybe headlight relay.....

No I dont have larger globes in it but I was looking under the dash today and saw a melted wire its red with a green stripe.

It will be some kind of feed to the highbeams, it activates when the high beams are switched so I assume that it is not a stalk issue it is somewhere further down the line.

Unfortunately the wire escapes into the loom and heads out of the firewall so I cant track it down.

I am wondering where the fuse for the highbeam is so I can check that?
