Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi sorry I did a search and found lots of topics on spotlight wiring but was unsure of the wiring I needed for the way I wanted. I have spotties on the ARB front bar that are linked with the highbeam. Not sure how cos they came with the car, but anyway Im putting 4 spotlights on my rollbar and want to be able to turn them on only when the accesories is on. I don't care about the highbeam cos I only plan to turn them on offroad and want to use just my front ones when on the road anyway. How would I go about this?? And I'm unsure of relays and how to use them. cheers

You'll need to have a plug somewhere so that they can be unplugged when driving around on the road. Otherwise it's easy as.

A relay is needed to run 12v from the battery to the lights without trying to run the voltage through the switch itself. Your on/off switch will simply turn the relay on or off.

The relay will have 4 maybe 5 pins. 30 86 85 87(sometimes x2)

30 I think this is conects to the body/earth
86 runs to the lights
85 runs to the battery with a fuse in line in case anything shorts out
87 goes to one pin on the switch in the cab

The other pin on the switch generally goes to earth, but if this was to be hooked up to turn on/off with the high beam, then the wire would run off the high beam wire off the back of the headlight.

I think I have the numbers right, maybe someone could confirm it for me otherwise I'll have a look when I get home at one of the relays in my lux.

sorry not quite right.
85 negitive earth
86 positive from cab switch
30 battery positive with fuse
87 positive out to spotlights

check current draw of all the spots,you'll probably need heavy duty relay. cheers scott

scotts dead right,, have replaced many home job relays that have died from being under rated for the job.
for the pin no. 85, the power which is on/off through switch is normally piggy backed into a h/beam wire, but you were saying u want it off acc. either way the wire can be low amp, my only tip is that from batt to fuse to 30 and from 87 to spotties, go a bit above load of spotties amp rating.

Is it possible to run one wire to the spotties from the relay and split it to both spotties? or will I loose power doing this??

Or could I run 2 wires from 87??? One going to each + of the lights??

I would consider 2 relays, you can swith both at the same time, but wouldnt want to run 4 lights through 1 relay

no I mean split the one wire from one relay to the 2 spotties. I'm already using 2 relays..
