diesel timing chains

anyone give any advice on how to tell if the timing chain has stretched on a 2.8ITD

Standard m/cycle practice, lift the chain off the centre of the large, cam, sprocket and see how much slack it has. Check the manual for the factory measurement, procedure.

Usually rattling it's arse off.
They have an auto tensioner on the side so as the chain stretches over time the tensioner takes up the slack.
The chain stretch specs are 16.5 to 9mm (allowed 7.5mm stretch) this is the distance measured between the chain where the tensioner/guide plate is. The only way to check this unfortunately is to remove the timing gear/chain cover so the gap between the chain can be measured.
