Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone know where to get cheap UHF radios and aerials I like the Uniden UH013 and the UH088SX but anything similar would be good. Also any good/bad feedback about radios people have would be helpful.

go to prestige com, very cheap and very fast, i ordered a uho13 off them last week on wednesday (approx 2pm) and i had it by 1pm the next day, there in w.a and im in tassie and no over night service ever seems to be over night when it comes to tassie, very happy with these guys, and they do a uho13 and aerial package

bought a uh088sx from prestige. good service and price when they bundled in a free 6db antenna.

recently was talking to friends 16.8k away with this unit. reception was very clear

We got some 88sx's from prestige, good speedy service, happy with the uniden also.

No doubt the icom is a better unit, but the uniden is awesome for the price.

i like the look of that GPS and UHF in one... wonder where i can get sum good reviews on it... I wanna know wat sorta GPS features it has etc etc and can it tell me roughly how fast i am traveling???

The combined GPS and UHF from Uniden looks like a really good unit, has more stuff than the in-dash model. If you get 2 it will transmit the coordinates between radios and tell you where they are.

Unfortunately neither unit has NMEA data output - so you cant drive moving map or autoroute software on another device.

Still pretty cool though.

i managed to find sum info on the uniden site and IMHO its useless.... well for what i want anyways

Try also Wow Sight and Sound at Annerley?? i think?? I got my Uniden there, cheap and good for advice on products etc.

I don't want to defame WOW but when I was purchasing mine I went there and they only had 6 units which went the first day of the sale, why did they bother advertising them I do not know, I'd recommend you ring them first to avoid nasty surprises.

The antenna from Prestige was far better than the one WOW bundled.

There is a WOW at Kedron now too, very handy it's not too far from JB Hifi you can get the complete electronic junk fix without cracking laps around town :)

I just got a uniden UH088SX from Ebay for $200. 6db antanna for $69.

Looks like a good unit i get it in about 3 working days

Did you get warranty with that? Only $26 cheaper than prestige for the value bundle which includes shipping also.

unidens are not worth the money , they are cheap radios with poor quailty audio, they have to add junk like gps's to make ppl buy them, if you want a decent radio but a gme or a icom

yes comes with warranty.. the unit was $200. and the antenna I got from a Guy I work with and actually retails at $ 185. but he gave it to me for $60 cause he traded his 4x4 in.

As for uniden not being worth their money I have owned 3 other Uniden products ( 2xUHF's and a scanner) and 2 hand helds which I have still.. Never any problems with them.. so I see it as good value..

agree.. I had one ended up throwing it in the bin after gettin a quote to fix it a second time.. Think it was an 011?

anyway I went with the GME 3400, now have the 3800 instead.

Prestige are about the best there is.. they would be a good site sponsor

Do you have a pic of the 3800? I've never seen a 3800...?

Olbis seem OK on price. You may want to ring them though, I think they have more models than what is listed on the website.

I had a GME in my last 4x4, and it was great - no problems (sold it with the car).

I am now looking a the GME TX630 2 watt handhled - $199 from Olbis (quoted over the phone - not on website).

I wouldn't mind one if i was able to source the gear to programme it...

i use philips prm8030's . they have 160 channels 25watt output. they are a remote head and can even selcall you when the car alarm goes off and open the transmit button so you/someone can hear whats going on inside.

Only around 200 off ebay. need a programming cable(pc) $50 off ebay. soft ware free off the net. These radio's to me are the bee's nee's of radio's. yes they are old and s/h but they were used by nsw police and telstra for years.

Oh and then there is the microphone with keypad. able to assign each key for a function, enter channel no's direct ,DTMF and enter selcalls manually.

If you want them cheaper the prm 8025 is not remote head but the same functions, then the 8020 has 64 channels and the 8010 has Ummm 10 i think?

So it depends on what you want to use it for and how keen you are

More features than anyone could use and always available on ebay. Make sure you get one which works in the CB band ie 477 Mhz.

Can some one explain the frequency range breakdown for me, ie whats AM, UHF, VHF etc

I'm just shopping now for a new UHF, was looking at the Uniden UH013 because it had the ability to scan Police/Fire freqs. But after looking at this thread I'm all confused

AM is 27 Mhz.
Vhf has 2 bands. the main one ( amatuer) is around 137 - 174 Mhz.
Uhf is 476 - 477 Mhz.
Police mainly use 468 - 469 Mhz . They use 65 channels in total. they have a huge repeater setup happening. they are starting to use digital. in the ACT they are digital only (so im told)
The legal limit on the uhf and AM bands is 5 watt. You need a license to operate on any other bands than those two.

On the good news, if you buy a commercial radio (eg prm,tait,icom) you should be able to find someone to programm it with everything you need on it, but if you buy a cable you can always change the programming to suit.

I used to have a tx4400 but after i got introduced to the PRM8030 i have never looked back.

I guess it all comes down to what you can find and what your preference is.

Another option is to buy a handheld scanner,hook it up to an external aerial so that way you can listen to what the cops are up to and then listen to the truckies as to where they are. I personally prefer this method. I actually use 2 seperate prm8030's for this as their receive capabilities are unreal compared to any scanner i am aware of.
