Outer Limits 4x4 Board

I'm buying my first truck and pretty much set on a 73 series cruiser. Is there anything in particular I should look out for when I'm checking it over? Any dealers in Vic. who I should approach to source me a good one that hasn't already been beaten to a pulp?

rust around the gutters, check the fifth gear in the gearbox, apart from that they are a pretty strong truck. obviously normal signs of driveline wear and tear are also issues, but they are teh same with any vehicle.

Dont worry about rust around the gutters (as they are a fibre glass top)
Just check the usual cruiser things
Motors are cheap (nobody wants them)
But theres plenty of room in the engine bay for what ever motor

i know some are fibreglass tops. I almost mentioned that, but i have seen BJ73's that are hard top, made from steel, so in that case, maybe it is still not going to rust because YOU said it wouldn't?

All BJ73's are FRP tops, if its a hard top it's a BJ70.

I've had a BJ73 for 7 years, now got 450K on it. No engine work done, same fuel pump. Oil changed every 5K. Only thing I can say to look at is rust in windscreen surround and behind the rear bumper. I 'spose the gearbox is probably the weakest link, especially 5th gear as previously mentioned. Gearbox overhauls are pricey!. So are fuel pumps.

3B is a low revving torquey motor that is very reliable, economical and more than makes up for lack on on road pace with offroad lugging ability.

If they still made them I'd buy another, but most are getting old now and hard to find one that hasn't had a hard life.

For correcting BJ as i was not on line to do so
Have had my Middy for 7 years also its a little modified but still running
the mighty 3B
Not to bad a truck i put her into 7th at tuff truck 2002 with only 35s on the rims
Also have another that im going to start building up
Theres nothing worse than having the old mule called a Bundera or a shorty ( shes in a class of her own)

73 series have either the 3b diesel 3.4 ltr or 4ltr petrol both have 5 speed and auto boxes
74 series came with a 3.5 ltr 5 cylinder diesel a very smooth running motor

Saw you in action at 2002 Tuff Truck, was suprised and glad to see you were still running the 3B instead of some V8 monster. GOOD STUFF!

I also get annoyed when my MWB gets called a B(l)undera.

Is there a difference bettween a Budera and a Mid wheel base?

They both look the same to me

Ruff I thought the same as well untill we had customer with one of each all the front panels are different from the firewall forward. They are totally different in a lot of ways.

this may be a comment totally surplus to requirements.... but a bundera is on coils and lux running gear (and the aforementioned panel differences), and a middy is a full size cruiser on cruiser leaves etc. And a shorty is the same but shorter!!

Imagine the indignity of having your Landcruiser called a Hilux

Its so hard having to educate people about such awsum trucks
Every body i know either buy short wheel bases and then lengthen them
or they get long wheelbases and shorten them
Why dont they just go and get the right car to start with :lol
