hi,
just wondering what people would recomend as some basic mods to a LWB GQ that will be used for general city work/ touring / tracks etc on a fairly slim budget (but can be done over a period of time anyway)
also, what tires would be a good alrounder (mud/sand/etc)
thanks,
Shem

Thats a good question. I'm in a similar situation.
Seeing as i'm still paying off mine for a few more months i'm gonna keep costs down til i pay it off i'm gonna keep my mods simple.
I've already done a safari snokel because i've already wet my air filter which was enough of a scare.
And next is chassi (spelling) mounted side steps to protect my sills before Land Cruiser Park in August. I've already put a pretty good dint in my sill so i've but that up in the list of mods.
After those i will go UHF, then suspension lift and then new tyres. But it is purely personal needs. My tyres are almost gone but i want bigger tyres so i need to save hard to get the suspension before tyres.
Let me know how you go cause i'm interested to know how you go.

i reckon,
2" suspension lift with good dampers
lowmount winch and bullbar to suit
extractors
33 mud terrains, Goodyear mtrs or bfg
UHF
snorkel
dual batterys
diff breathers
and if funds permit a front locker

good list, buit i reckon the singe best mod on mine is the sliders.......feel so much more comfortable knowing my sills are protected and I can rest up on the sliders if need be

Good thread, I've only just got my SWB 88 GQ and am going to do these basic mods.
I've got (came with vehicle)
WARN XD 9000 lowmount winch and ARB bullbar
33 mud terrains, BFG
dual batterys
Ipf lights x 2
I've added;
Fridge
Home mad drawers in back
ARB headlight loom kit
Next is;
UHF
2" suspension lift with good dampers
snorkel
extractors
and as stated a front locker if funds permit.
Roof rack for long trips
Sliders maybe?? - what would I be paying for putting these on a shorty?

I think you guys earn more money than me seeing as winches and lockers are going in on the list of 'basic modifications'.

about $700.00 + frieght from me, to be honest I havnt looked if snake do ones for shorty, but $1000.00 odd for GU/GQ LWB + freight.
I just find I drive more consistantly not worying swo much about panal damage on the sills

2 inch body lift $140 for a kit and do it your self. very easy to do.
2 inch suspension lift $695 for the kit and do it your self. very easy to do.
33 inch maxxis mudders x 5 $1000. Get bob to do it. very easy to fit. These tyres are awsome on and off road. Great value.
Sliders $650 SWB $750 LWB supplied and fitted.
All of these prices are from my store and I have no problem guiding people on how to fit them selves if that helps.

My ideas...

My ideas learned through hindsight (Read: lots of money spent and damage done

). Be honest with what you are going to do with the car, don't get grandiose ideas like me and head in the wrong direction..
RIP out carpets and check for previous owners negligence
2" Bdy Lift. It is arguable if this doesn't go in then your sliders will be clearance taking...
Full armour. Bull bar w/accomodation for a winch, Side Rails, STRONG sliders, Cut your rear quarters and Rap a stron bar around to protect your vulnerable expensive lights. And also get a dual wheel carrier happening. If possible get a winch in at this stage.
Strengthen Front diff housing + Strengthened Tie Rod
Accesories (Dual Batteries, Driving lights, Seat Covers, Stereo )
if TD42 put a TURBO on at this stage as they are really quite necesary. The benefits for roadability after driving a few are just great + Fuel savings if driven well.
IF credit card limit < maxed out THEN
2" HD suspension
33" tyres
OR
4" Suspension
Castor Correction with 3rds arms
35" tyres
4.6 diff gears
Adjustable strengthened arms
ELSE
See bank
END
hahah

my brother is in the market for new tyres and when shopping around one tyre mob told him the maxxis are really good and he's interested. The only problem is that he does a lot of on road driving (work vehicle). so those mud terrains you speak highly of, do you think they will last a good 60-70k kms. He wants good offroad performance but more importantly he wants a good on road tyre.
My Patrol has bridgestone desert duelers and they have almost done 90k kms. (i bought it off my brother who had it since new). They have never had a flat and they still have a little bit of life left in them. They go real well on loose gravel and dirt but have found them not very good in the mud.

do a 2 inch body lift and 3 inch suspension lift. buy everything and fit urself. teaches u how it all works. use procomp shocks as they are cheap and awsum. coils use dobinsons or kings. get urself a set of 33 bfg's or mtr's. these couple mods will get u about 98% of the places u will head to off road. remeber patrols are damn good outta the box so minor mods do wonders. if u have a bit of cash left over see jeremy (surfection on here) for his bomb proof sliders. what i said above is about 2 grands worth if u shop around good and fit as much as u can urself.

why the 2" body lift? wouldnt the 33" tires fit with the 3" suspension lift?
my mate has a 4wd shop, but he doesnt do many patrols.
i sorta figured at first do a suspension lift of 2-3inch and mud tires then do some more things later on

id highly recomend fitting a mild lift of 2 to 3 inches, some 33's, and sliders, these will give you enough of a starting ground to head out, you may find with the 33's that the may hit the flares, so you will need to do something with these,
your best bet, is do the lift, borrow a mates tyres and try em out, flex it all over the place and check to make sure evrything clears, if it does great, if not, work out why, and fix it, then go and get some rubber,
but remember, sills take a beating, protect them

33's easily fit with only 2" lift
dont worry about the body lift unless you're after 35's

yeah, cool.
i dont really wanna put a body lift in it, as my misses has to drive this thing during the day (it'll be her daily driver to shops etc) and she is short and she has to be able to load baby into back as well !!
How much are MTRs roughly ?

to get any kinda decent sill protection that wont compromise ur clearance under ur chassis level u will need a 2 inch body lift. the way the patrol tub sits in chassis rails makes it hard other wise..thats my reason for a 2 inch body lift.. also, 33's used to rub on my patrol with 5 inch coils..so even if they fit with 2 inch lift when u make them work u gunna wish u had that body lift..

get a 3inch lift some good muddies slidersare a must as my sills will attest to , i also agree you can't go past procomp shocks for value for money
remember guys if u have a tight buget you don't have to buy new. the only thing i have bought new on my truck was the suspension package shop around and don't be in to much hurry as there are a lot of bargins to be had second hand .

i gotta get the patrol first anyway

even when my 2" lift sagged down half an inch i never had 33's rub on the guards,
the higher lift you go the closer the tyres get pulled towards the rear of the front guard as your radius arm is put through more of an arc.
hence why on some 5" lift 33's rub
a simple spacer kit can fix that
And with only a 4" lift i put 35's on, with no rubbing at any articulation.
now with a 3" lift, and 2" body i fit 37's on with only 15mm cut from guards
Check trading post for 2nd hand 33 muds, they always come up.

i had rubbing in the back with my 5 inch coils.. have the spacer kit in the front with drop brackets.. 33's in gq will srub in the rear on wither guards or chassis rails or wheel tubs around where the bolt for ur back seat bolts mount in a shorty.. i guess u could fit longer bumpstops to stop this but i like extra

Not even on the inner guards? I had rubbing on the rear inners same as Viper with 6 sus and 2 body and 33 BF and MTR.. the JT's are even worse..
