Diesel Oil

I was wondering whats the difference between petrol oil and diesel oil?

Is it safe to run a diesel oil in a petrol engine? I have seen viscosity of 15/40 in diesel and they come in 10L drums so it works out cheaper than buying 2 x 5L bottles.

I have been told that the high detergent content of diesel oil is good to clean out the internals of the engine as well so I cant seem to think of any negatives of putting a 15/40W diesel in my truck cept if it isnt compatible.

some petrol oils can be used in diesels, it'll say on the container, i dunno what the difference is though, i just run a dedicated diesel oil in my diesel (rim x) and petrol oil in my petrol.
If you wanna buy bulk and save why not just by your petrol oil in 20L drums its a fair bit cheaper - thats how i do it.

On the topic, i know an old bloke who runs eaton truck gearbox oil in his old commodore - he gets it free he's a diesel mechanic for the council, apparently the eaton boxes have an oil filter and pump - why waste it! the old commo's got around 300k on it. :?
