Hey guys,
Having a problem with my power steering.
Was out wheeling and all of a sudden while going through some rutty terrain she went really heavy.
I jumped out checked fliud and belt and it's all fine, it's not leaking from the box either and it's not a seized steering pump coz it's all spinning over fine.
Anybody got any suggestion's or has this happened to anybody on here before.

it could simply be you were turning into a steep rut or something
i do it all the time just weaving my way thru then when you try and turn up something bloody steep the powersteering just cant lift the whole car up onto it! your lucky thou, my box leaks like a sieve....

steering fluid boiled??
usually in some steep ruts.. it limits your steering thus making it hard.
there are two different boxes that came out in GQ's (assuming you have one) whereas the later models had the larger ps box

Is it possible to install a PS unit from a later model into an earlier one? The PS in my 88 GQ is a little firm, I'm wondering I what you said about later models would help??

Yeah my problem is though is that the power steering is now heavy all the time since then, it's like trying to steer it while the engine's shut off its really really heavy.
Any idea's.

or maybe an issue with the pressure relief valve in the pump, might be stuck open.... probably not thou

Sounds like the right answer.
Jack up front axle under diff, check it turns easily, look for damage.
Bleed this way too.

some people mount GU steering boxes to a GQ as they are stronger but also dearer.

How much of a stuff around is it, or is it pretty much a straight fit?

Just go a late model GQ one.. you get the strength of the GU one but witthout having to piss fart around with a custom drag link with differing tie rod ends..

Ok loosened off the hose a touch at the back of the pump to make sure it's pumping out fluid and it was.
Oil was froffy and light pinkish instead of dark redish color of power steering fluid.
Might try jacking it up and giving the system a bleed is it worth a shot.
Could there be water in the oil as i have performed quite a few underwater excursion's.

if the oil is froffy it means that the pump is sucking in air check tha return lines and double check fluid level

It wont give assist if frothy.
If you cant find an air leak...
Need to let sit for ages, then Bleed with NO weight on wheels.

Thank's bazzle, ill pop it up on some stand's and let it sit then give it a bleed and see how i go.

I gotta say, given how and when it happened, it doesn't sound like you are going to fix it just by bleeding it.
I guess it's worth a try, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.
Funny though, if you just had a leak then you'd be losing fluid; there isn't really anywhere that it could actually suck air in.
I'm thinking that a buggered pressure relief valve sounds plausible, or else some internal damage at either end of the system ie pump or box.
When you checked if it was pumping, did you check how much? When the motor is running, fluid should be really flying out of the pump; was it a powerful stream?
