I have a 91 SWB Mav, and I was wondering if anyone has ever changed there power steering box for a bigger unit and if so what was it?? Also any ideas of costing? Also Tie-rod ends, what is the strongest made? Thanks for your help.

I replaced the steering box in my 89 Maverick for one out of a 96 model Patrol. From around 93 on (I think) they went with a much bigger steering box. It bolted straight on and has the same tie rod taper. GU's also have a similar bigger box but I think the bolt pattern is different where it mounts to the chassis — perhaps someone else who has tried this can confirm. The GU pitman arm also has a different tie rod taper.
As for cost at most wreckers:
Old smaller GQ box - $300 or so.
New bigger GQ box - most seem to ask $500-$600 (I was lucky and got mine for $350)
GU box - $800+

Thanks that is very helpful. Are the 96 Patrol Tie-rods also different from the 91 EG- Is the thread external or internal?? Which is the most reliable and strongest tie-rod?? ( for aftermarket steering arms)

early model has the small box.
late model has the larger box with 082 on it.(bolt straight in)
gu has 104 on the box (bolt straight in)..... you must then do the front steer arm because they use a drop pitman arm and reverse tapper. i have all in stock.

can't be definitive about this but i vote the gq leaf tie rod with the female rod ends. i pretzeled a custom tie rod with full hydro steering and the rod ends just laughed.

The tie rod ends have varied in type ie. internal/external but the taper has always been the same on the GQ. The GU taper is smaller.
