Some Questions from a new GU Owner

Hi all,

I have just become the proud new owner of a 2002 4.8L GU  . It will not be long before it undergoes a few minor mods, including a 3" suspension lift.

A few questions:

1. I am hoping to fit 34 x 12.5 (or similar) muddies, once i have done the 3" lift. From what I have read on this form, it seems that there shouldn't be any problems. does this sound reasonable? (legalities aside)

2. How does the rear "barn" door hold up with the added weight of 34" spare?

3. Any recommendations for workshops to install the 3" lift, in Melbourne? I see that Cheezy Racing do lifts, and I have heard good things about them. Any comments?

4. I would be interested to hear from anyone that has done an LPG conversion (replaced the main tank, and left the sub tank), to find out what sort of range you get out of the ~90L LPG + 36L petrol, as apposede to the stock petrol combination

Thanks,
Jonty

I have a 2002 4.8 manual - great car. Basically still new - inly just clocked 35,000 klm's.

Only basic mods:

- 2" lift with King Springs and Koni Shocks
- 285/75/16 Cooper ST's

I bought an ARB spacer for the spare tyre. It goes on the door, then the original mounting bolts to it.

I have found that the tyres rub slightly on the inner rear wheel arch - by slightly, I mean only very slightly. I didn't even know until I was washing it one day and saw the scrub marks inside the wheel arch. Only the right hand side though.

I think with a 3" inch lift you will need to consider extended brake lines, diff breathers, etc. Also, more importantly, legalities. This is why I went with the 2" - the extra 1" wasn't worth the hassle (plus the tyres give it some extra clearance anyway).

The tyres will fit no worries there is a GU on this forum running 36" pedes with a 3" lift. I've heard that the barn door gets rather annoying with rattles with the extra weight but quite a few guys just use a spacer on the wheel carrier to fit the bigger rubber. Wouldn't hurt to get a rear bar and tyre carrier if only to protect the rear of the vehicle better. As for a lift it's not hard to do but there are many reputable places down in mexico that can do the lift for you. You'll have to wait for one of the petrol guys to give you info on the gas. I've only ever owned a diesel 4by. :D

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like I may need to consider a swing arm at some stage.

gu4800...Yeah, that is almost new! I thought the GU I bought had pretty low mileage at 45k :)
