I am looking at buying a series 1 or 2 disco to join the rover fold

Is the fuel economy as good as they say on the 2.5tdi motor.. my 3.0 v6 pajero gets about 450km on an 85l tank round town (running premium)

Should I go with an auto or manual? I normally prefer autos

Any help is appreciated 0X

I think the best model disco to buy would be a late model Tdi S1, about 99/00 was the end I think. Some of the early models had minor problems with timing alignment and gearbox lubrication, but they were all sorted out by the last models AFAIK.

I personally wouldn't buy a series II disco, they have more overhang, radius arm rear end which is also not as good offroad as the S1 suspension, and while the Td5 seems like a pretty good engine I like my diesels as simple as possible.

Yes, the Tdi will use less than half the fuel you are using at the moment. You are using about 18L/100km around town, mates with Tdi discos can consistently get under 9, and as low as 8 or even mid-high 7's on the highway. And the engine is easily tweakable for more power.

Yes, the manuals get better economy, but I cannot tell you by how much. The tdi auto is a good setup and works well though, if you are happy to sacrifice a bit of economy.

I'll go the other way. I'd get the D2 anyday, hands down.

More comfort,
*Power everything
*CD
*Split climate control
*Shunt controlled Auto, silky smooth
*Newer seat design
More room,
*150mm more boot space - you can even fit the esky now!
More power,
*TD5 101kw, 315Nm
*Upgraded to 170kw, 520Nm with an ECU program and I/C
*12.5l/100km town - 10l/100km Hwy Auto
Better suspension
*Air option, self level option, + high mode
*ACE - No body roll on road, disconnects in low range also for more articulation.
*Radius arm rear suspension, balanced suspension f2r
*Larger front radius arm bushes for more articulation
*Dont vibrate with a big lift
*Doesn't bind suspension with a lift
*Traction control - with 4 wheel on the deck work a little better than a rear only locker, lift a wheel and it doesn't work as well as a locker. IF it fails then drive it like every other 4WD. Standard fitment also.

MY99-01 and then the D2a's are the pick as they still have the CDL. Also IMHO TD5 Auto ACE

LR have put a lot of time into making it a better truck than the previous model, and it is. It does have more rear overhang which is its one downfall, though the other option is to lose a lot of boot space. There is a lot of excellent tech re building up the D2's, though it wont fall into your lap like D1/RRC tech does.

I agree with isuzu go for a late model 98-99 TDI I brought a 99 TDI S 2 years ago and i wouldn't trade it for the world apart from services and my own personal modifacatins, (tyres, suspension, winch, rear lokka) it hasn't missed a beat. Try and get one with a good service history though is the most important thing and then keep up with it. I had a look at a D2 but there is to much electrics on them and personaly i didin't like the look of them as much, with the longer rear and no manuall centre diff lock in the early D2 was a major turn off too. So strat hunting the papers see what you can find S1 discos are at really good prices now good value for money in my book.

I've had a S1 Disco, hated it to be honest. After owning Rangies, they are just nowhere near as good, even the older Rangies have an edge over the Disco bar the noise factor and more comfortable seats.

Personally not a diesel fan. Econimcal yes but with the costy of diesel skyrocketing in recent times (a good 15-17 cents premium over ULP) the savings have dwindled. V8's are better for DIY and cheaper to service. But that's my opinion :D

I would go the S2 Disco like Slunnie said and for most of the reasons mentioned, but I would buy the V8 just to be different . The extra fuel costs make up for that great exhaust sound

Regards,

Trav
