hey guys i need a hand with some wiring..

i want to run a spottie on the back that will come on whenever i select reverse to make it easier to see at night, but i would also like to be able to switch it on and off whenever i like, even if the ignition is off and it's in neutral or first or whatever.

can anybody tell me how i would have to run the wiring to set this up?

Get a 3 posi swtich, on that has on/off/on.
Then run from the standard reverse light wiring to one side of the switch.
Then run from battery to fuse to the other side of the switch.
Then run from the common (normally the middle prong) to the new light you install.
If its only one light and it is rated at a current draw of less then the current rating of the switch you want even need a relay.

Doing it that way will allow you to select one of the following

have standard reverse light with new light when reverse is selected, switch in one of the on posi`s

Just standard reverse lights when reverse is selected, switch in off posi

Just the new light, switch in other on posi.

or run the wire from the centre terminal of the switch to the coil on a relay.

Its possible, ya need to have a tickler power wire triggered whenever reverse is selected, then constant power, depending on the wattage of the light run a relay, you'll only need to utilise one switch.

do it how guts said. If you care about keeping it legal, you need an isolating switch outside the cab on the independant wire that runs straight to the battery. ie: you aint allowed to have a switchable white light on the back of a vehicle.

thats how mine are both done except add a relay, they stay on reverse, unless someone gets antsy behind me, and they get 300W, but you can select on all the time, off all the time and on for reversing.

Yes but have a fuse in the new wire from the battery. The old standard light will allready have a fuse.

no one has a finalised diagram using a relay?

So with the reverse wire, what does that actually connect to? The positive wire from the reverse light? or is there something a bit closer to the cab?

Also if doing something similar for a set of front spotties where is the best place to locate the high beam wire for the switch?

Doesnt really matter.. mine is justbehind the light coz that was the easiet place to trace the wire to using a mutlimetre. But if you wanna fiddle around with the switch in the dash you can. Your only drawing enough current to trip the relay, which will be minimal.
