Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Work was rather quiet today as it was raining so thought i would help out a mate who owns a 4wd repair shop. my job was to pull a head off a 1HZ in a 80 series. Off comes all the crap, off with the head. Inspected the head and block and guess what we found? Picture a peice of foam that has had rats chewin on it and thats what we had. All the combustion chambers bar one where worn away at least a few millimetres and the block was eaten away also, warped between cylinders and just knackered. Engine is not rebuildable as the block is so eaten away that reboreing would not be possible. Rang our local engine reconditioner and he reckon the cause is just constant dribble of water into cylinders from a weeping head gasket. Scary proposition i reckon! Made me think abit more about where the water is going in my engine!! It spun me out. Anyway i'd never seen anything like it before. Have you?

Ive seen alloy head's warn to pretty much nothing and have been told its because people put diffrent brand coolants into there motor and some brands when mixed together react and cause the alloy to get eaten away.

Doesn't just happen to alloys heads either, it can happen to anything if you mix certain brands of coolant, they react and corrode, always pays to flush em right out before introducing a new coolant. The bloke we used to have working on our trucks told me that mixing coolants would corrode the guts out of the truck donks!

I second that idea. Mixing coolants can destroys motors! And so can leaving them in to long or topping up with townwater as this dilutes the concentration and also adds metals, etc. causing electrolysis type reactions.
