Firewall flex.

Folks I've got an old IIa with rust in the DS side of the firewall, that in itself is ok as I can repair that when its all apart, though when steering I've just noticed that the firewall is flexing down at the transmission hump by about 10mm backwards and forwards, which in my books is a fair bit. It turns out that there are a few bolts that locate the floor to the firewall missing, but is this seriously meant to flex like this or is it an indicator telling me the firewall is shot and probably rusting from the insides out as it flexs? Cheers for any responses.

Just while its sitting on the ground. I'm not sure what it does while rolling. I tend to think if its normal, then thats ok, but if it cops a hit, it'll half snap the firewall.

sounds like your just getting some flex in the chassis...do you notice any other movement when it is happening? could it be something binding up against the firewall?

there shouldn't be any flex there, check the bottom mounts at the chassis aren't rusted out or loose.also check the front mounts at the footwells.

What he said. My IIA has no flex in the firewall.

Thanks for this fellas. I had a look at it and decided rust fixes are not on my agenda, so have just bought a replacement firewall. Looks like it'll have a ground up rebuild in the upcoming holidays.

But bit takes two to tango.

Have you checked the condition chassis outrigger attachments. It might not be the firewall.

 This is not the plan One Iota.

I'm stripping it down to the chassis anyway, so I'll check it out when its apart. It may need some fab. The DS side of the firewall has crumbled already.
