center diff lock?

G'day all
I whent 4wdring today at lake lyall it was little wet on the tracks but i dont think it was to bad,well my bloody pajero (nh lwb auto) had major dramas trying to get up some of the hills in 4llc,were my mates NH manuel had no probs at all, another mate was watching my pajero and told me that my front wheels were spinning but the back wheels were not moving at all they were there just to keep it off the track, so after some major swearing at my pajero i finnaly made it up all the hills (only just).
Me was saying it could be the center diff is not loacking and not giving drive to the back wheels could this be true????? so what does the center diff do?

Locknut,
Sounds a bit suss to me that your back wheels werent spinn ing.
AS far as I know the centre lock just locks that diff so that 50/50 drive applies, ie equally to the front & rear. I could have believed it if it were the other way round , ie no drive to the front wheels.
maybe others have an idea??

yeah thats what i said to me mate "i should have drive to the rear as its the main drive for the car and if its playing up it shouldn't have drive at the front"
All i know is that i had real dramas trying to get up the hills at one stage my pajero stalled and i was in a uncontrolled slide down the hill, damn thing wouldn't start in neutrel i was just lucky there was a large flat area at the base and no one was behind me,it was the 1st time i really shit me self just lucky me kids didnt know it.

Something very wrong here.....................
If your absolutely sure you had low range engaged then you either have a busted rear axle or something's knackered in your t/case.
Worst case scenario in low range (without difflocks) is one front wheel & one rear wheel spinning when you loose traction.
Ian is correct locking the centre diff distributes power equally front to rear (50:50) so if your only getting drive to the front then something is definitely wrong.

well rear axel is ok because i drove home,me thinks it was a case of crap worn tyers full of mud and my wheels were just spining.

yeah could be,
when you get get a chance put it up on stands at the rear & put in 4wd & see if it pulls you off the stands.

if you believe you are getting drive to the front wheels and not the rear you might wanna try the opposite to the above

Ive found on one occasion, after driving in 4llc. Id stopped for lunch, than when we drove off the centre diff would not lock. So it can happen.
I think in my case, it unlocked when we stoped and heat sink may have stopped it from engaging. After about 1/2K it locked in and has never done it since. I now put it down to low Ks on the car at the time. I think the centre diff locks in by an electric soliniode( correct me if Im wrong ) Just need to get out and use the low range more.

All Gen 2 Paj's have mechanical locking centre differentials as soon as you engage 4x4 Hi the centre diff should lock if it doesn't there is an issue inside the t/case or the selector mechanism.
The Gen 3 has a small electric solenoid motor which moves a linkage connected to the t/case. The t/case lever itself is divorced from the t/case.
