Gday guys
Hope you can help me out - i have a 1988 GQ patrol 4.2L petrol (carby). Over the last few weeks, it seems to be misfiring quite bad. After running it for about 20 minutes, it runs fine.
1. Got all new spark plug leads.
2. Spark plugs are a few months old, checked them all again yesterday and they are fine.
3. Checked the spark on each lead and there is strong spark going to all spark plugs.
4. Checked the timing a few weeks back and its spot on.
What else can i check? Im not that great with mechanics but have a basic understanding.

Have you checked the points, coil, and fuel mixture?
Points are a well known problem on this engine and only cost about $7 for a replacement set.

Points! I had new ones installed by 3 different places in 12 months.
Buy a $300 Pirahana Electronic ignition kit and get it fitted, it'll pay for itself in fuel in 12 months.
If you like playing at high revs try a Crane Fireball kit.

Replace the points & check dwell angle . Dwell should be 38-42 .

ill back up the electronic ignition idea.. i run the crane fireball xr3000 kit.. sweet as. coupled with a hi energy coil this thing will have ur probs sorted..and will let ur tb42 rev its wringer out.. u have to actually be careful not to over rev as it just feels so smooth and keeps making power

can these electronic ignition kits be fitted to the injected 4.2's? They still run a distributor and points.
