test glowplugs

can someone tell me how to test the glowplugs?
every morning when i start the thing it misses and coughs and heaps of blue smoke. After about 30 sec its fine and is good for the rest of the day.

take them out and put them across ya battry, they should glow red hot in a few seconds.......i dont know how you could test them while there still in the head though

Measure resistance with a multi meter from top of plug to cycl head????

What vehicle are we talking about?

Remove connecting strip from glow plugs and test continuity with a multimeter. Measure between the threaded tip and ground--should be continuity. Check the connections at the temp sender on the thermostat housing (sender with 2 wires) Bad connections here can make the glow plug timer not work properly. Also disconnect power from connecting strip and check power is getting to the connector when key turned to glow position. This is all assuming you have a TD42.....

thanks for your help, seems thats it. ordered new set today,not cheap at 71.00 each but thats life.
