ACE

Post by POIDA »

I've searched this site and the net for problems with ACE as I'm about to get a 99 Disco with it. As far as I can tell it is reliable, apart from a recall on it, as posted here last year. What I want to know is has there been any problems with it as far as wear and tear or does it seem to be durable and long lasting. It seems like and expensive system to replace parts on.

I keep track pretty closely on an Aussie and a global series 2 Disco net, and I've not heard of any ACE systems failing. The only thing that is just showing up is the chassis - swaybar bushes can develop some wear and produce a clunk when changing direction, The bushes cost about $15ea, 4 in total. ACE is definately the go in my opinion though, it has a fair bit more articulation than the non ACE Discos as the swaybars at in low range at low speeds relax and have no effect, and when moving faster corner very flat on the road by hydraulically counter tensioning and removing the body sway.

Yes I was impressed with it's onroad behaviour when I test drove one. And I'm anxious to find out it's offroad advantage. I was concerned about the price of replacing the rams perhaps when they wear out but the disco I'm interested in had 70K klms so it shouldn't be an issue for a while. One thing though is it seems a little noisy, which I guess you'd have to expect for a high presure high speed hydraulic system. The noise seems to be the pump whiring.

Yeah the ACE is a little noisy. A bit of a hum when cornering.

Havent seen a ram fail yet. A couple of ACE valve blocks have been replaced (Approx $1900) the only other thing is ACE pipes leaking which the old one piece lines have to be replaced with a 2 piece unit - Approx $400. This is not a common problem that I have seen though. Very good system.

I have a '99 S2 with ACE which has 115,000 klms on it and no dramas. I have only had it since 90,000klms mind you but it is a great system and works superbly.
My 10 cents.

Do you guys find the pump is noisy, like whiring while idling. Particularly under the bonnet with the bonnet up.

Have never noticed any whiring, but then I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination and therefore would not know that it was the ACE system whiring.

I only tend to notice the noise when cornering and not on the accelerator.

Picked up the Disco on Friday. ACE is definately awesome. It corners better than a sedan!! Flat as. It's not noisy really. My first diagnosis was right, the idler pully. Also I put the Disco through the mud on the weekend in a little quarry. It went like a dream. With traction control and Hill descent it was really sure footed. I love my D2!!
