Garden edging from bunnings. Its very thick and tough, and it doesn't sag. comes in different widths too.

NT with 31's on 7's, Flares are bout 80mm wide. I have taken off the factory flares and tacked these ones on the remaining metal tabs.

I have about 10mm left under the flares before the tyres

Cheers

definately back this one up.... got this on my junk too and it's hella strong!!! had the vehicle resting on it a few times and it's still all good! can even cut it to make it look classy and match the lines of the vehicle  only cost $25ish for 6m

might need to cut the flares a lil bit so u've got a horizontal mounting surface (assuming u have a wide-track with plastic flares :D ) or space it out with washers or something

Yeah garden edging worked for me, just line it up, drill holes and rivet it in, will never come loose, slid up against some trees in the mud, took the bark off the tree and my flares were fine.

i thought i was the only one who was that cheap! i also put the plastic garden edging on for flares. thought it was a hillarious idea at the time but obviously i'm not the only original thinker.

The only problem with using garden edging is that whilst covering the tyres it isn't legal in terms of roadworthy as a flare needs to be somewhat structural and be able to deflect a pedestrian away from the moving tyres. I had used for years a type of plastic flare which covered the tyres was flexible and cheap to replace. On my latest defect I had to replace them for proper urethane flares for it to pass the roadworthy.

Just a heads up that's all

funny mine passed at vic roads the other day with those flares.
They are way stiff and I think more structural than urethane
Are u thinking of the weed mat stuff?
I had these flares on my vitara, and every time they got hooked up they smashed my guards in , Structural!!!!!!!

Cant go past the bunnings flares, was sitting on mine on the passenger side in my gq shorty and it caved in the panel and the flare was fine. Screw or rivet them on, put a bead of black silicone where it joins with the panel to make the join look neat and away you go

In Qld, the outer edge of the flare needs to be 10mm. So as NOT to provide a cutting edge in the event of striking a pedestrian or other.

The best I ever saw was a guy with a lowered WRX. He was tired of scratching the bootom of his front spoiler so he put a piece of aluminium stripping under the leading edge. Problem was it extended out 25mm in front of the leading edge and was about 1mm thick.

I think he knew he was in trouble when the police turned up and he was trying to unscrew it.. He had struck a pedestrian at slow spead (15kph whilst braking) but it still severed the pedestrians foot off at the ankle...

Sorry, didn't mean to Jack the thread...

Clark Rubber sell flare material in a variety of widths. Less than 65mm is just black rubber, over 65mm has wire reinforcing in it so that it doesn't sag.

I paid something like $4.50 per metre for the 65mm. It is a good profile and looks factory. What's more the motor registry love it.

something like this? mine sags a bit, esp when there's a straight or flat bit on the guard.

Getting back to that 10mm rule for queenslanders...

You could use whatever material you like, like as mentioned already, and just get some weatherstripping rubber stuff from clark rubber or someone and wack it on. You'd get 20mm thickness on the ends easy with the right stuff, then you can't get busted, not that i think anyone might actually get in trouble for having a flare that's not thick enough...

I've been going through the Queensland Transport Vehicle Inspection Guidelines and can't find any reference to this...
