Does the drum turn easily when in free spool?

I'd say you've got excessive resistance in your wiring, probably a bad joint (or joints!)
Try measuring your battery voltage before and while you hit the switch. If the voltage doesn't drop/doesn't drop much your bad joint is very high resistance. Try to measure voltage either side of each connection while you're holding the switch. Where you get a big change, that's your bad joint.
If it drops a volt or more, hit the switch and hold it while you run your hands over the wires and connections, feeling for warmth. If you find a joint which is warmer than the rest of your wiring, that's the culprit! Note that you may need to hold the switch for a minute or so before you notice warmth.
Good luck,
Scott
