How important is having the flywheel machined when you replace a clutch

Thinking of having a few days off and doing it myself. The mechanic who replaced the last one told me the flywheels have to be machined. I didn't get it done and had clutch problems from day one. However that was with a shit cheap Repco clutch kit

I believe it comes under the same thing as getting your disc brake rotors machined.........gouges and scratches reduce the friction surface for the plate to contact with.

It shouldn't cost that much extra to get it machined and then you'll have less complications with the new clutch plate !!

Edit - I wouldn't have thought that it needs doing every time you replace a clutch, but it depends on how much you've 'cooked' the previous clutch !

I believe that if you have the time to get it machined then do it. As besty said it's just like you brake rotors. It shouldn't cost all that much either. Best thing to do is when you know when your doing your clutch call a machine shop/clutch house and book it in so then there are no delays, in and out in a day.

Arh Shxt, Friday night and I just made it home because the dam clutch started to slip bigtime. Had organised to have a mechanic do it including the flywheel for $250.00 all up next Monday week. just can't be without my little truck so I will have to do it myself over the weekend. Will check the flywheel and if it really requires doing I can get the mechanic to do it again, I suppose he will charge me the same price.

Did it The fly wheel was okay but had it machined, The clutch plate could have been used again and only about half worn down to the rivets. The pressure plate was stuffed with the springs all bent. Better to buy good parts than cheap shit.
