Rodeo Mods.

I took a mate of mine on a 4x4 trip recently and he is totally hooked now.
He has his own business with a few vehicles and one of them is a late 90's Rodeo the prime candidate for modding.
It's totally stock standard except for a canopy.
He wants to do it up to be able to do medium to hard stuff plus be practical enough for camping trips.
It has the 3.2 V6 DOHC so has plenty of poke.
He's talking about a bullbar plus winch, a 2" lift with 31-32" muddies and even a front ARB locker.
What's the go Isuzu fella's ?? What size tyres can they run ?? How good is the stock limo, anything to be aware of etc.......

31's will fit witout any mods. 32's will fit with a little torsion bar twist, and will depend on the rim offset. with 2" lift no problems even with 33's.

Hey Frank,

I'm afraid that I cant offer much detail but you can pretty much do the same to a Rodeo that you can to the Jackaroo in terms of mods.
ie: Front/rear lockers, suspension etc... As far as bigger tyres go, 32s "should" comfortably fit under there with a 2" lift but best to try before you committ. From what I can remember, I havent seen any seriously modified Rodeos in Australia or OS so you mate may have to be a bit of a pioneer.

Did you see Roothies review of the Rodeo in the last 4x4Monthly? It was probably quite accurate in terms of build quality and reliability but I was a bit annoyed about his constant mention of its poor offroad ability. Just one mention would have sufficed. Anyway, I think a Rodeo could be quite a good performer offroad with some decent clearance, bigger tyres and a locker or two.

A mate of mine has a V6 rodeo Dual cab. Hes got a lock rite diff lock in the front. He has just had some realy strong extended shackles made up. He got a set of ball joint spacers brought over from overseas.

He only had the gear fitted a couple of weeks ago and also had a balljoint flip done. The rodeo now wears a set of 32 inch cooper st's.
I wouldn't go over a 32 inch unless u give the front guards a bit of a trim otherwise the tyres may scrub when u turn the wheels.

A very capable rig with plenty of clearance :finger:

I have got a pic but it's a little bit dark. My mate borrowed a set of 33 inch Baja Claws and put them on the front before he did the lift and he took a pic. Hes going 2 email the pic 2 me soon :D

I'll find out where he got the spacers from but since then hes had a few spaces made localy.

Thanks Leroy but might just sit on it for a while until I find out whats going on with 4x4 mods and legalities over here in WA.

So have you got them on an Isuzu? What are your thoughts on them?

I will be lifting mine soon...... gonna do the shackle thang... and reset the torsion bars.... should be able to do at least 3 inches lift..... i'll do pics when i actually get to it. I have an old control arm from my vehicle, i'm going to make spacers myself and flip the ball joints.... the guy here that does the rego inspections says it will pas here for rego :cool: :armsup:

oh and one other thing.......... If you want to totally change the way your isuzu performs off raod... remove the front sway bar. I did on mine and the difference is HUGE off road, plus it doesn't make a great deal of difference on road, just a little more body roll, but it's not dangerous :lol:

Be interested to hear how it all goes Roedao.

I agree about the swaybar. Havent totally disconnected mine but have the articulator quick disco which does a reasonable job. Makes it a more comfortable ride offroad that anything. I dont bother to reconnect onroad as the change is negligable.

That would be handy Noel, but the problem is there is nowhere to put a quick disconect on it.... the connecting arms are only about 2 inches long :roll:

The new Jack has a rear sway bar!!! Well had a rear sway bar. It sorta fell off last week end. the strangest thing!!!! :roll: :roll:

do a 2'' body lift and get a kit from www.calmini.com . i think they are 3'' . then run some 35's :twisted:

then it begins to cost for the new diff ratios....... 700 bux per diff i'm told :roll: I just put 31's on mine, much bigger than standard and don't drag too much.... and they look good :cool:

I had the ball joint spacers on my 2000 Rodeo and was the only way to get a good wheel alingment after a torsion bar crank. I also cut the bump stops. I had the leaves in the rear reset with extra leaf to match the front. In all got almost 3" front and rear.

I'm a little worried about adding a spring to the rear...... did it do much to your articulation? i'm not too sure about stiffening the rear of the vehicle.

I had the extra leaf added for extra load carrying. Fine with a load but without it was so stiff. If I were to do it again I would buy some new Enforcer leaves like a mate did and they seem to give a good unladen ride and also extra load carrying.
