Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi All,

I am about to do my first oil change on my new 2000 4.2TD GU. I have searched a bit on here to see what oils people are using and when i went to the shops i found a 20 litre drum of FUCHS 15W40 diesel oil for about $80 as opposed to about $60 for a 10 litre of Valvoline or Penrite. Has anyone heard of FUCHS or does anyone have any feedback on it? I want to look after my new toy and don't want to start by putting crap oil in it.

Any other recommended oils i should look for?

Fuchs is top quality oil. The company came about as an amalgamation of Century Oils and Silkolene so I don`t think there is any question of a quality issue. It is very competitively priced here in UK so you may be paying a little more for it in OZ. Your locally produced oils should be better value for money and just as good spec wise. General opinion on Nissan oil seems to be in favour of calcium based oils( which is really just soap) so check with your manufacturer to verify. Nissan say not to use magnesium based oils but I`ve found that not a lot of companys use that as a base anyway. I would say that drum of Fuchs would be $au40 here in UK.

I'm now using FUCHS oil, great price, checked with the company and it exceeds 3000PPM calcium based detergents which I believe from previous treads is required for the Japanese Nissan motor. There is alot of info from people on oils in the archives on this site although I didn't find anything on FUCHS oils. The people I got it through rate it a a quality oil, other than that I've had no drama's with my 03 GUIII TD4.2 intercooled. Good luck.

I have recently been in contact with the Laboratory Manager of FUCHS oil and he has recommended using FUCHS Titan Truck 15W40 as it meets the 3000ppm of calcium detergent requirement. Following is the email from him:


The product you will need will be Titan Truck 15W40
this product is more designed for the Japanese and European engines
It contains around 3700ppm of Calcium detergent.
Attached is a product data sheet. Its available in 20's and 205's.

Its also used by major bus companies through Australia

When queried further if too high calcium detergent would be harmful for the engine his reply was:

Not in Japanesse and European engines, due to the ring placement on the pistons they tend to generate more soot and need the higher detergent levels

On a previous email he has also indicated that the following are below the required 3000ppm calcium detergent requirement:

So my question to all the oil gurus here is:
Would this be alright in the TD42T engines?

Thought that I'd throw this one back up as no one has dared to comment past the previous very referenced & technical reply. ....Anyone.

I'd go with what the Fuchs bloke recommends
Interesting thing is that Fuchs Titan Universal HD was used for most of the warranty period on our TD42T (CF-4, as specified in the owners manual), I didn't know the high Calcium formulation was available. Is it new ?
I should also add that a de-sludging compound was used for a few thousand km's at 110,000km, (Auto-RX) and very little, if any crap came out, which could mean several things such as 1. the engine was pretty clean already, or 2. It's snake oil.

Did a few used oil analysis' (to determine a trend with the Universal HD ) and it returned excellent wear metal numbers.

Fuchs have been around in Germany since the thirties, and make excellent lubricants and are factory fill on some Mercs, etc.

My order of FUCH TITAN TRUCK came in today and is ready for pickup at the distributor.

3 drums (20 litres) at the price of $60 + gst each.
