My car as it says above is blowing alot of qhite smoek on start up and wehn i say alot i mean a shitl#@d!!! it calms down after a while to nothing, but thats after like 5 mins of idle. The smoek does not smell at all, and doesnt spit oil, fuel or water out which leads me to bevlieve it is water problem, but then water doesnt drip out?. I took the rocker cover off to have a look at the state fo the top of the motor, and it was chocka block full of gunky oil stock to the rocker cover, and the rockers, therefore symbolising miosture leaking into the oil, but recnetly dropped the oil and ran oil flush through it and ussually if the water has contaminated the oil then it leaves a milky residue, which wasnt the case when i dropped the oil???? Is this agallery or cylinder corrosition/rusting or a head gasket???? Any help would be great, i am in the process of slowly takign the motor apart. Also when starting the car it seems liek its heavily flooded, so badly that it takes along time for the engine to get running after a few long attemps of cranking it over. Any ideas, help is much appreciated

Thanks, Scott

i hate to be the one to say this......

but i have never seen an SD33 motor that doesnt blow white smoke on start up when the motor is cold.

they all do it, they also run a little but rough until they warm up.

the last 3 i have owned have done it and all of others i have seen from both ppl on this board and mates, all do it as well.....

its an age thing. needs to be re ringed but i wouldnt bother it wont harm it, u can easy get 450,000 kms from an SD33 before any major builds....

yeh, i no what u mean by smoking when it first startes up, this smoke is like a v8 doing a burnout, it just belows out, and its done i think from memory 320,000km's, and its supposedly had a rebiult recently, but i dont trust him as far as i could throw him! :x This is not normal

maybe it just needs a Re Ring.

all SD33s do it and they blow lots of it on start up, but if yours is far worse than wat ive seen from experiance id say its time to re ring her....

either that or you could have a problem with your injector pump. white smoke happen wen there is raw fuel in the cylenders left over from wen the engine last run....
this usually occurs wen the injectors dont shut off imediatly after the motor stops and then u get left over fuel in there.

i would be getting the injectors checked out to make sure they are sweet and if there is corrosion on the ends etc etc....
and get the injector pump re timed and tuned.

My old MK SD33T Patrol used to do the same thing. When started from cold it would blow heaps of white smoke........This is due to incorrect temperature and unburnt feul........

Once warmed up it would be fine.

I rebuilt the head on mine and also rebuilt and checked the glow plugs and it still did it. Mine did not use any water and or oil but still smoked on startup.......Everyone I have spoken to said that theres used to do the same thing.....

On the sludge front mine was pretty much the same.........try an engine cleaner if it really worries you.......I was going to try the one advertised in the mage but ended up using another brand.....All motors will sludge up it all depends on the age and serviving intervals...

If it runs OK I would say you have a normal deisel MQ/MK......

Time to go down to the local Auto shop and order a set of GLOWPLUGS !

White smoke is caused by unburnt diesel and this generally happens when the engine is cold and the glowplugs are not sufficently heating up. This is even more noticable in the "colder" months.... you should see a SD33 starting up when there's ice formed on the top of the puddles in my driveway !

With a new set of glowplugs there will still be white smoke but only for a few seconds not for 5 mins !

Glowplugs retail in varied prices and it WILL pay to price em from differant places........

I've been quoted as much as $25 each ! :bad-words:

Seen em on "sale" for $16 each !

But have bought them for as low as $8 each :D

The last set I bought came from a "Tractor Repair" shop ! .... go figure :?

Opps .... forgot to add ..... ( for Jeff's benefit )

Blue smoke is a sign that it needs a re-ring not white smoke

i notice my error and did indeed post correctly as above.

also all the ones i have experianced with higher kms have had oiley vapour in there, even if its not blue smoke, which i didnt even mention, the oiley vapour is a sign of rings.

the main offender is the injectors...... or as kingy said glow plugs. though even wen i bought a new set of glowplugs for mine it mate stuff all difference.

also with regards to glow plugs....

retail on them is about $25 odd each....

i can help u massively on the price of glow plugs if u needed a set.

but to save urself the hassle...... and the extra money.

a trick i used to do is flick the plugs on, wait for the timer to go off, kill the key then flick to ignition again and let the timer go again.

always started smoother and less smoke wen i ran the plugs twice. may save u a bit of money in the plugs.

if u need some drop us a PM either way.

i have some new glow plugs they i got with the car so i might change them, is it worth just taking it to say midas or another mechanic and get them to strip it down and cheak it out for us (or any recomended deisel mech's as im in perth)? i think new injectors and all the other fuel parts that are offenders should be cheaked out to. Saying this once the car has started and is at the point where it doesnt blow any smoke, then the car runs perfect, runs really nicley, and there is no lack of power.

cheers, scott

i recently replaced the glow plugs on mine to try to stop the smoke, no difference. It starts a *little* bit easier, but not much. I had the injectors replaced and the pump retimed, made no difference. I ran a oil flush treatment through it, that only caused the front crank oil seal to start leaking. I just put up with it filling the street with smoke now.
My neighbor has just bought a sd33 mq as well which blows almost as much smoke as mine, so i just blame the haze on him :)

Ahhhh

There be this there crap you run thru motor that cost n arm n a leg but worth it.... You buy it (if someone will sell it to you) for about $90 for 700ml, put your pick up n return line in the can n run it n rev the nuts off it every 15 mins.... do this till its all used up n dry - makes a WORLD of difference.....

Do you mean the stuff sold by CEM?

white smoke like a steam train can be caused by the lack of glow time or air in the fuel system

check your glow time should be on cold morning about 15 to 20sec
air in fuel system can be caused by faulty feed pump try pumping lift pump before starting see if makes a diference

sludge in motor is not uncomon for jap diesels caused by a number of things
lack of oil changes
poor quality oil
blow by which can be controled by more regular oil changes

cem products decarbonizer and oil flush do work if used correctly

they do clean, but getting rid of all that sludge might not nessesarily be the best thing for the motor....
you may hate urself.

wen they clean they remove all that sludge, but in older motors that sludge is wats keeping the original gaskets and seals from leaking....

alot of the time once it goes u get oil leaks, as u either take the dry gasket with the sludge or it was gone and sludge was holding it from leaking.

personally, IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIT IT

just give it regular oil changes.

The stuff patroldude refers to is Wynns Diesel System Purge, it's meant to be run through the car using a machine at the garage but the occasional place will sell it to you.

As he said just pull the supply and return lines from the tank and put into the bottle and run the truck as normal giving it a good rev every 15mins or so. One can usually runs about an hour.

Change the filter when done and it's all good. The funky smell hangs around for weeks especially if you drop the filter when changing it spilling the stuff all over the drive

A mate ran the stuff through his truck so I tried it, has slightly reduced the startup smoke but not a lot, although significantly reduced the smoke that used to cause a screen behind me whenever I came to a good hill!
