i have a mate who owns a 2000 hilux with a none turbo 3l motor the car has 200 000 km on it

he was drivin on road at about 60 and the eng made a noise as if the fan belt had let go and was flappin around the straight after that was a bang and the oil light on

he pulls over to find a large pool of oil on the ground and number 3 leg out of bed

question is ,is this a common fault with this motor has anyone herd of this happening

i know with most luxes its a prob to have number 4 big end knock .also this rig is service like clock work only mod the rig has is a set of 33 n hasn't been offroad in the last year at all any suggestions

Timing belt let go?? Was it replaced at the correct interval, along with the tensioner and idler pulleys?

the timing belt was replaced at 70000km ago and all the pulleys that get the change over as well . he thought the enitial noise may have been it until the the hole was spotted

i thought the L series motor was a free spining motor ?

definitely not. it's more or less impossible to build a free spinning diesel, especially indirect injected. throwing a rod isn't all that common but it does happen, the problem with early 2.8's (without HAC) is that they soot up their oil very quickly and thus provide inadequate big-end lubrication, the big end gets hot, expands and over-stretches the cap bolts. If the motor has ever gone more than 5000km between oil changes then it is susceptible. I guess it's too late for that motor but it's also cheap insurance to freshen the big end bearings every 100,000km and use a jap spec oil (high calcium).

HAC = High Altitude Compensator - it winds back the fuel delivery in lower atmosphereic pressure to help minimise the soot in the oil. early 3L's didn't have one and tended to soot up their oil fairly quickly. there were a number of warranty claims because of it.

the later ones are less fussy, but any IDI diesel will thicken its oil if it's not changed regularly. a good test of sludgeness is to pop the rocker cover off and inspect - there should be no coating of black goo on the inside of the cover or on any of the head. if there is, run a few doses of oil flush stuff and do a few changes 500 - 1000km apart. expensive in oil and filters but cheaper than buying a new motor.

pfft conversion schmonversion. just go a dodgy home-brew turbo on the 3L, can be done for under $500 if you have welding skillz. Boost the daylights out of it and drive it to death, then when it's dead, do your converison
