Hi,
Im looking at buying a 2.8 diesel NM 2001 Pajero, about 120000 ks, what are the 2.8s like, fuel efficiency, and power and reliability and are these vehicles a good vehicle for high speed mountain roads as well as 4x4 touring. I live over an hour from the nearest major town and Im also looking at doing a few desert trips in the near future.

Is the diesel worth it or should I look at a V6?

i have the previous model (nl) in the turbo diesel and am very happy with it.
fuel economy is good at 11 to 12 ltrs/100 around town and 14 to 15 pulling the camper trailer on the highway.
power is just sufficient when pulling trailer, but fine for commuting.
have just had to replace glow plugs at 97k, but other wise no reliability issues as long as you servise them regularly.
i run amsoil synthetic oil throughout and change the engine oil every 15k(with a filter change at 7.5k).
you need to check the service history very carfully, for oil changes(every 7.5k) and try to find out the previous owner. ask them about the vehicle and find out what probs it has had(if any).
i think if you are commuting for an hour each way, then the diesel would be the go.
my 2 cents worth anyway

Hi Bob,

I have the NJ 2.8 turbo and am very happy with it,

have just got it back after a Major check up at the diesel specialists, 304k km and a clean bill of health apart from 2 stuffed injectors and possibly a little wear in the injector pump (which i might have rebuilt anyway in the next 12 months) and I got them to give it a MAJOR check up

the previous owner had very regular servicing, but only the basics, filters oils etc so I was quite happy with the outcome after that mileage.
only probs I've had so far are cracked exh manifold (aparrently common when engine is overfueling like mine was) and glow plug solenoid (which i just cleaned) air con pipe replaced and needs new electric fan motor and the mechanical fan has stress fractures (which I will replace next week) and replaced plugs as they were a little old.

so very good considering the mileage, I was getting 12>13l/100km and that should definately improve which i am Very happy with considering how much weight i have in it now!
Power is reasonable enough for me. Long hills i sometimes wish it was a 6cyl, but good enough.

Rob.
