G'day Nissan gurus...
I've tried searching for this but have come up fruitless. And I feel dumb because I know it's probably a question asked and easily answered before.
But.
Replacing an MQ 4spd with a MQ (MK?) 5spd g'box... much work involved?
Cause there's a cheap one going on the 4WD Monthly forums... and god knows that MQs with 4spds could do with an extra cog. What's involved in swapping them over, are there other parts off the donor car to get ahold of?
Should I just go rob a bank and buy a GU IV?
Is there a God?

so has V8 patrol from here, check his members section.
but basically in a nut shell.....
If u have the standard 6 cylender whether it diesel or petrol it doesnt matter........ adn have no intention of V8 then this applies:
u will be able to bolt it straight up to the motor no dramas.
u will have to make up some new gearbox mounts or cut ur old ones off and re use. u will have to move them back as the 5 speed is longer than the 4 speed.
it is longer in between the transfercase and the gearbox itself.
u will then have to get ur rear driveshaft shortened and your front one balanced.
You will also more than likely have to notch out the front gearbox crossmeber cause the front shaft will prob hit on it......
then its just a matter of making your shifters fit through the holes with light mods to the floor and top gearbox selectors.
if u have a V8 like me, i just bolted the box in the same position and moved my motor forward cause i have the room

if u were to move the motor forward it saves all the problems with driveshafts and everything, with the V8 u would only have to shorten the radiator hoses etc.
the gearbox bolts at 2 mounts on the transfer case.
as shown in the pic below the 5th gear is the small section that sits inbetween the transfer and the 4 speed box itself.
if u get the 5 speed and bolt it onto the same transfer mounts, ur transfer case will be in the same spot, therefore same shafts etc,
but ur gearbox will be further forward by the length of the 5th gear section which i think from memory is about 7 inches....... correct me if im wrong.
the motor will then need to be bolted on further forward for the new gearbox itself location, u will need to cut the engine mounts off and re weld them on, that far forward.

depends how you wanna do it - yeah - screwy has done this but you can retain your original mounts n modify the section that runs between the body n box.... only about 2 inches difference hey - my mate did it in his - no problems in last 3 years till his body rusted out n we stripped it down - no stress fractures, no warping, no rust and no mashed up rubbers - his was a 4 speed diesel that we changed to 5 speed then pulled out again n reco'd the box... easy way of doing it wiout cutting mounts etc..... oh n he never had to notch his fron cross member either....
Alll this stuff will be up for sale later this week too!

also once u have done that u need to modify the top piece ur talking about to get the shifter back to the standard floor hole.
if u put it in a 6, at the least u will have to cut the mounts off and move them back and then still modify the top box to move the shifters forward again to the floor hole. plus shafts
i have bought 3 now, and cheapest was $500, dearest was $700 but wreckers want about $1200

Well the guy has a bunch of stuff, front and rear diffs, g'box, t-case etc for sale for 500. So I was hoping I could get away with a couple of hundred for just the 5spd.
Although -- I am only a young'un and though I am not scared of a spanner I don't have a heap of experience with a lot of stuff. So, if there's some already mod'd stuff for sale, P-Dude, I wouldn't mind spending a little extra for it. Do you know how much your mate wants for it?
