hi all, im looking at upgrading from a discovery S1 v8 to a S2 but im not sure if i should buy another v8 or go the td5. The v8 has been good but just wondering if i will get better fuel consumption out of a td5. what are the advantages and disadvantages between the two?
any help will be great.
thanks

G'day mate,
I had a V8 D1 4 speed auto that I loved - except for the fuel bill. I now have a Defender.
The essential reason I chose a fender was for the hose out floor and excellent off-road ability, but also because the td5 was seen as such a good engine.
Its economy is amazing, and it does pump out some good power for its size, but in the fenders, it is as noisy as hell. Inside the D2s the noise is better insulated, but there is no mistaking it for a diesel. It also has 10kw more power in the D2.
It would really depend onthe type of driving that you like to do. If touring is your go, then the diesel will see you happier at the bowser, but if you really like the horny exhaust note that the rover 8s have, then by all means get the 8.
Other wise a 3" straight thru exhaust on your td5 should have you loud enough to compensate.
Micka.

The disco that i have now is 98 S1, with twin pipes, dont ask, the exhaust bloke made it fit. It sounds great and thats what i like but i just throught a change was on the cards. I do alot of cruising as well as off road work but i dont know if i should update or spent some money doing mods on the one i already have.?
cheers.

If you are happy with your S1 then keep it...
Is there any particular reason you want to update ??
Better the devil you know and all that
For interest, the Td5 should return between 9 - 12l / 100km as apposed to around 18-22l / 100km in a V8..

In my opinion the advantage of the V8 over the TD5 is instant power and a sexy tone. The TD5 will have better fuel economy, and can be chipped for 170kw/520Nm with an intercooler.

Go the V8. Instant power and simple to service, even the later ones aren't too bad in the hi-tech stakes. Still an old-age design underneath all that electronic stuff.
Plus the cost of diesel now getting more expensive (well over 10c/liter more than ULP in Brisbane ATM) so the savings are not really there. For outback touring and extended runs diesels are a better option though.
Look at what you want to use your disco for and work from there.
Good luck with it.

I have a tuned TD5 (~200hp) and a slightly tuned 3.5i V8 (~200hp as well)...I'd go with the TD5 for anything where I'll be in Low range more than 75% of the time...if the wheeling needs instant pick-up and speed, then I'd go with the V8...
