Hey guys as you know these old cars are getting a bit old now and after speaking to scewy i think it is about time i started doing things for myself. Since fitting the 33's there is a clunking noise coming from the steering would any of you have any idea where to look for a problem there.
Also as the car is 23 years old and the suspension, shocks have never been changed i would assume that they are well and truly stuffed. ALTHOUGH im not really interested in changing the springs is there a way that i can grease em up and look after most moving components in the car, like maybe replace the bushes and new grease or something?? Same goes for the steering.
And last of all i want to extend the shackles and have been reading that whatever lenght you lengthen the shackles you will get about half in raised height??? So would doing a 3" extended shackle be a bad idea?? Me father in law is a metal fabricter so i can get him to make some solid ones or should i stick to 2" max??
Cheers marc

Forget the shackles dude. They flatten your springs over time so its not worth it mate (personal opinion).
MQ's are easy as to work on so give it a shot yourself - all the guys on the board are usually more than happy to help but hey.

Not if they have been replaced - if they are stock springs I would be replacing them anyway....

2 inch extended shackles in the max i would run.... NO MORE.
the other thing u will notice is. that even though they are longer u will get lift but not gain and possibly loose flex.
i made my fronts at 6 inches long top to bottom which is about 2 inch longer, my rears i am running 6 inch i made also but standard rears are 6 inch... i just lowered them down below the chassis rather than them mounting in through the chassis at the top.
i would be replacing all suspension bushes with nolathane ones for the type of driving u do these would be good.
grease ur driveshafts, and all steering ball joints....
with regards to the clunk.... jack the front wheels off the ground and check the wheel bearings for tightness first....
also, the steering stabilizer, the thing thats bolted the the front crossmember on the chassis with 2 bolts in front and 2 undernieth.... thats the idler steer arms are running off...
grease that bitch full

well worth it.
check ur steering box bolts that they are tight also....

Yeah i have feeling that a 23 year old stabiliser wont be doing much good. If i replace should i get a normal one or one of those return to centre dealie's?? I dont have P/steer atm.

Extended Shackles:
Total and utter waste of time if fitting up to old springs...... the springs WILL simply flatten out even more.
Also because the centre bolt isnt actually in the centre of the leaf pak but off to the fixed end side of things, the actual "lift" is less than half of what the extension is..... so 2" shackles will give you LESS than an inch of lift !....shyte load of effort to gain SFA !
Front Hubs:
your wasteing your time packing em with grease atm..... obviously there is wear there and grease cant possiably replace that wear, sure it will help .....for about 10 miles !
Its an old trick that ppl used to get slightly over worn bits through a RWC and it does tighten things up but only for a very short period, Oh and most RWC guys "look" for freshly greased parts ....... to them its a sign that there IS a problem thats being covered up
After 23 years of god only knows what type of driving and service records, it would be a fair bet that the wheel bearings are stuffed...... along with the kingpin bearings. No amount of grease will solve that.
Shockers:
if they are 23 years old then they are well n truly "left hand, right shoulder" material
Power steering:
get one ! and while your fitting it replace the bushes in the idler arm with the plastic bushes kit NOT the rubber kit.
Rubber kit =
Once you have replaced the springs, wheel bearings, kingpin bearings, shockers, & have fitted the power steering you WILL be amazed at the differance........ its then that you start checking out tierod ends/stabilizer arms etc etc to remove any other "worn" parts that may be effecting the way she drives ( more n likely tho you wont need to touch another thing ).
