Floorpan crack/rust. HELP !!!

I am loosing interest in this litle yellow beast which I need to place pictures up for so ya'll can see what I am talking bout. But at the same time I am so close to having it comp ie; nissan trials ready... Anywayz story goes.

I made wild passionate love to a rock with my rh fr quater and drivers door and got this fixed and resprayed along with the roof and bonnet and sill and crap. At the same time as this I decided to pull the carpets out and got through pulling out the carpet over the front foot wells and nearly died.

The passenger side looks as though the floor pan has cracked/rusted so they have welded a big chunk of plate over the whole section covering the hole for the body mount (Another reason I had the carpets out) and underneath the vehicle there is a bit of rust in this particular spot starting to show. I am told by a number of people it isn't bad but to me it is bad because a) it is rust b) I can't access the body mount bolt so it is dodgy. c)it is my car.

THere was in addition to this a little rust hole/crack in the passengers side floorpan Which i paid someone $127!!! to weld a piss-ant plate over he didn't cut the rust out-- is that right ??? Shouldn't he be cutting it out and then plating ???

So my fear is that underneath the plate which has been previously welded the actual body mount hole has rusted out and isn't functioning. So the floor pan is cracked and rusted. What have folks done in this instance ??
Can I go to a wreckers and attack a gq with a grinder and get out a passenger side floor pan w/ the body mount hole and weld in.

What would be best in this instance. It is in a c#$t of a spot because it has started to eat a bit of the lip that the sill is welded to..

Oh yeah I can't go a ute cab cause I just spent a lot of dosh making it pretty again. So that isn't a suggestion :?

Thanks folks.

depends on how bad the rust is but mine was rusted pretty bad so i took to it with a grinder and wire brush and got most of the loos stuff off first. Then use a good quality rust converter. Once converted painted in killrust. The floorpan was pretty thin by this stage so i covered the whole lot in a couple of layers of fibreglass matting. Nice and strong and I can't see it rusting out like that again. Just an idea.

Yeah....

It is just that it is around a I guess you would call... structural mounting point... I think the location is fairly important.

Bazzle any idea ??

cutting the floor pan out of a crashed vehicle may be the go, suggest rather than killrust when you finish it that you coat in and out with a bittumas (spelling) paint such as cutbacl 100. this will always stal a little soft (not tacky to touch) and will not crack or chip like an acrylic etc or kill rust. this will still be repelling moisture when they are tryimg to get the bastard to rust away in a poddock 100 years from now :D I used this on a mates 40 series and has turned out very well, see greenfourbys members thread

you got any pics of the damage? May have to bite the bullet and cut the floor out and reweld a new plate in. Really you would want to avoid doing that!! :?

Yeah pics might help :? ...

Umm I think my issue is that I am at a crossroads I am kinda close to finishing this car for comps and such but really wanna try something new. If I am to keep it I wanna do it right. Which really sounds difficult. Obviously the benefits of keeping it are that I know exactly what is wrong with it / history etc...

I am thinking of just selling it.

It is the standard old tale of cars don't give up people give up fixing them..

Plating (or making new floor and mount area) has been done by others before. That area is under a lot of load and mounts will push thru. Also join at floor to firewall often pops open. Get that stitch welded at same time. Makes area a bit more rigid.
Check under rear mounts on the channel they sit on, This also cracks and need a 4mm plate under neath (can be glued there with panel adhesive. Only needs to spread the load. Could do same with 4mm to reinforce all mounting points underneath to strengthen them up to spread loads and keep height even.

Sweet...Thanks Bazzle and other folks..

I would do a Body of chassis deal if I am to do a proper fix. And because of the body being of I would strengthen rear coil mounts/sandblast and paint chassis and probably yank out a clutch. Great how my mind works..

You have given me something to think about..

Cheers

Haven't seen that many rust converters, so just wondering what is the quality brand.

As always, bazzle is right on the money. The stuff I have used is in a big bottle and you can almost stand there and watch the rust turn purple while painting it on. Pay the extra for good stuff.

Resurrected !!!

My front carpet was shagged I went over to beresfield wreckers and yanked out the carpet from an 88 silver shorty they had sitting on the hill.
When I was pulling out the carpet, which is in pristine condition, I noticed that this thing had not one ounce of rust. The floor looked immaculate like I might possibly have eaten of it had I been hungry and/or had food...
I want a pristine body like that...

Mine looks like the carpet has been glued down and while they were doing that they through in some salt, sand and dirt.. And the windscreen must have been leaking for a few years. So I have glue and bits of felt stuck to the floor all over the car HOw would you get glue and bits of felt off.. Wire wheel ??? then go spastic with rust stuff and bitumass....

Jeremy..
