Suspension problems:

i suspect my feroza may be lifted in the rear but not the front. When i wound the front up i broke the idler arm. i replaced it with a s/h one but it broke aswell, so i wound it back down. IWOULD APPRECIATE IF SOME ONE WHO HAS DONE THIS MOD THEMSELVES COULD POST ME A REPLY

Make sure that you have the front wheels off of the ground before you start winding the front torsion bars up. Otherwise your forcing the weight of the entire front end on the one poor bolt. I'm speaking from experience. Toyota bundeera head bolts make a good replacment! Nice and strong!

Good Luck.

it winds up fine as the torsion bars and shocks look like the have been replaced within the last two years, not real sure though i have only had the 4wd for 6 months.

the real problem is on road there is no prob but as soon as there is some articulation it broke and then the next one did the same. there have been a few posts on this forum that suggests there is no problems when the torsion bars are wound up. just trying to work out if its common for this to happen or if i just got a s/h one that was already buggered before i have another crack at winding it up :?

What do you mean it "broke"... did it snap in half or did the rotating joint become unserviceable?

your not winding it up to far are you???

there should be about 10mm from the back of the bolt to the floor of the truck.

From memory..
how much through do you have hanging out of each end when you wind it up???

not sure how much of the bolt was left out but only wound it up to it was 10mm lower than the rear

How much lift are you trying to get?

Check out the gap between your bump stops and the suspension. I found the ride was crap if it was wound up too far (was running out of downwards wheel travel over large bumps.)

I've never heard of anyone breaking steering components from winding the front up- and that includes people who have shaved the bumpstops to increase travel even further. (Hmmmm, maybe you should check someone hasn't removed the bumpstops?!)

I have my bump stops removed and I've had no such problems!

what should be the minimum gap between the bump stops and suspension i really want to go as high as posible in the front without runing into to many problems,

I did actually forget about that! However I'd classify that as Drivetrain, not suspension!

wound the torsions bar up a few days ago and took it for a run seems to be ok  will keep my eye on it for a few weeks and see how it goes. do you dangerous dave have extended rear shackles

extended shackles are not roadworthy in QLD.

i don't think extended shackles are roadworthy anywhere

That's why yearly roadworthy inspections should happen. Fine, if people want to use that sort of stuff exclusively offroad, but when you're playing with other people's lives on road..... Dave had them on his Feroza and IIRC they started to let go or bent?

he might still have them...

if you make them strong enough there shouldn't be a problem, i mean stock shackles on some rigs are silly thin. if you address the castor problem in the front, there isn't much risk, i wonder how many people die every year due to extended shackles vs how many people die due to poor driver skill.... now which should we be addressing?

 Now think about a badly skilled driver with a modified 4WD !!!

I have super omega dodgy extended rear shackles... However they are twice as thick as the standard ones. I just need to weld braces in the centre of them and it will all be good. If they bend then I just make more!

with extended shackles could you wind the torsion bars up enough to level it out

Yeah no worries at all. Mine was level when I first set it all up. I have to check it again as the rear springs are worn in now. I'm a bit on the lazy side!

dangerous dave, i have been watching the idler arm now for a few weeks and guess what. The f****r has broken again, are you aware if this is a common prob

I'd say something may be wrong with your suspension set up. I'd get it checked out by a suspension specialist. I only say this because mine have been wound up for ages and I haven't had this problem. I have no idea what it could be, sorry.

Good Luck
