Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Guys a mate has a jeep J20 1982 with a 454 big block and t400.
He keeps busting the left outter uni wich in turn destroys the axles .
Has anyone got any ideas for stronger axles maybe from the US or here?
Ive heard of the CTM unis but not sure if the axle would withstand the power .

What size/type of rims/tyres is he running....IMHO 454 + >33" tyres is probably too much for a D44.....especially if he ike the loud pedal....

But yes you can get uograded shafts and CTM's (see MattN about here somewhere).

Hes running 36 simex ET2s
Rockcrawler rims with internal beadlocks .
I cant find much info on the jeep J20 on the net as for the right size axle for the Dana 44 front there seems to be so many diff 1s for diff models .
Is there anyone i can ring to get some advice ?
Also they are a 8 stud flange

Yeah things like getting the stud patterns to match etc is a bear....
But the CTM's will DEFFINATELY help......just seems a LOT of torque for the D44 and just personally I;d be assessing how hard it's getting used.....
Might be able to get a D60 from a F250/350??

If keeping the D44 - I;d be looking to truss the tubes to keep the flex down.
NAyhow hope my ramblings provide some assistance...

As for the diff it has been heavily beefed up for the power but the uni goes and takes the shafts with it.
Do you know if the CTMs are a straight swap i seem to found a site in the US that said ya need to machine the yoke for them to fit ???

I don't have the CTM's - but as I understand stock D44 axles require machining to accomodate the full circlip.

If you run CTM's you have basically gotta run alloy shafts...

Yukon shafts are a good choice if you want stronger alloy shafts and aren't made of money... superior shafts are probably better as long as you have got the cash for them.

CTM uni joint are bloody amazing bits of gear... they are super beefy.

I run Yukon alloy shafts and CTM's in my D60... talk to Sean at ABT4x4 as he now imports Yukon shafts and CTM's for D44's and D60's.

I thought as much goin for the CTMs that he would need stronger axles i looked at the yukon shafts they have a reasonable rep but i just dont know which axles to order theres that many .
Does anybody know the length of both the left and right hand side for the Dana 44 for the jeep j20 also are all the outter axles the same length?

I'm running Warn chro moly and CTM's in my dana 44's with 38" TSL's and a healthly 258.
My friend runs a dana 30 with chro moly and ctm's with a very healthy 401
and 35x15.5 tsl sx. Shelled the t case and the rear pinion but the shafts and joints held.

nearly every second edition of JP magazine ( USA ) has either dana 44 or 60 conversions and upgrades , there heaps of possibilitys out there , recently seen an article about converting D44/s to beafy forged 35 spline axles , ARB has a new locker to suit this conversion too accomodate the axles . theres heaps of axle companys out there who make them for D44 , unfortunatelly most are in the states.
