More Diff discussions.....

I know this subject has been touched on a lot before but I still have my questions that I cannot seem to find answers for in previous posts. I would like to open up discussions on the matter, any advice from people who have been through this would be greatly appreciated.

I am Halfway through putting a toyota 4AGZE motor in to my 96 stockman ute.The 4AGZE motor that I am installing makes 126kW somewhere in the 6400rpm range from factory. I have purchased the yj spring conversion kit and springs from the states and I am still to decide what diffs/axles to use.

Will the 4AGZE snap standard axles with 33s and lockers? I dont like the idea personally.

I cant seem to make up my mind based on opinions I have found on here. I am very seriously considering hilux axles at the moment but I would like to know a little bit more about using them. The motor Im putting in is a high revving little thing and I am unsure whether it will like the extra load of the heavier axles. It would be good to hear from someone who has installed hilux diffs and axles to hear what they thought the dirrerence was/whether it slowed them up.

Does anybody know what a hilux diff and axle weighs in comparison to the suzuki?

Is it worth considering Vitara diffs and axles? I havent been able to find any info on the differences between the two. Are the vitara's any wider or stronger? I like the idea but dont have any info....

I'll leave it at that for now, I really would like to hear some intelligent discussion on the matter,

Thanks

Ryan

Vitaras are IFS so you only have the rear to play with and it is centered so probably not appropriate. Hilux is probably going to be stronger but you will lose ground clearance whilst running 33s which can lead to problems offroad.

What sort of driving are you going to be doing. If it was mostly mud and sand then the Sierra stuf would probably be ok if driven properly. If it was going to be high traction stuff like rocks then the combo of power, lockers and 33s you will bust Sierra stuff

The lux axles may allow you to legally run 32"s -33"s in QLD depending on the feedback from the engineer and as such is seriously worth investigation.

You might find if you're a coily that you have to use bundy diffs which would add to the cost.

The hilux diffs would probably more suitable in their gear ratios to what you want to do anyway - most vitara centres are really short (5.125:1) and thus you need something like 37" rubber to get back to normal gearing on a non-coily widetrack.

this would also be an issue with the bundy diffs which are normally 4.88:1.

You forgot MQ :D

I didn't add nissan axles because I thought they were considerably wider; I thought they were wider than the cruiser? Plus I have had some bad personal experiences in a dreaded nissan.

It is a leaf sprung zuk, although I dont know if the stockmans are widetrack?

Do the hilux diffs centres sit in the right place?

Is there a big difference in petrol and diesel ratios on hiluxes?

How much ground clearance are we talking about losing if I go to hilux?

Gee I'm punchin out the questions tonight! I dont know about that pumpkin though, I think a sweet potato is a little easier to insert myself...

thanks for the help

I had 126kw a 4agze & 33's & didn't break diff parts until the lockers went in.
First drive i broke a c/v in ten minutes.also crushed rear perches twice.

Then fitted some 34 10.5 JT2's 2 busted c/v's & a rear axle.(one trip)
So yes you will snap axles, sell your 4.1 diffs before they're scrap metal & get something stronger. lux or maybe patrol?

Mine is now twincharged so the zuk diffs are coming out to be replaced with hilux, wish i didn't buy lockers & 4.1s for the zuk diffs :bad-words:
The choice of lux over patrol for me was the lux diffs turned up for the right price & the centre's are removable,i dont think mq's have removable centres?.

As for fitting move the rear perches inboard to match your springs, the front spring hangers have to be moved outboard to match the diff because the centre is in the way.

i have known people selling mq's (from a farm) for $500 and often the brake booster also bolts in then sell off the rest to the wreckers and it all works out nice and cheap

MQ diffs are about the same width as vitara diffs.

I think I'll give the Nissan diffs a miss.

What the go with moving the front spring hangers Drew? is this due to the size of the diff centre? or is it the position of the centre.

Anyone got a pic of a sierra with hilux axles? Will they attract too much attention?

hilux axles, make no sence to me, as MQ,s are so ezy and strong and cheep.

what prob's did u have with nissan stuff :?:

You're also forgetting a Lux axle swap is the only legal way to SPOA in QLD as well... another good reason in favour of the Lux over the Patrol diffs.

so your saying you could not do a spring over on Dana 44's say, in QLD
with an engineers cert :?:

Its the position of the centre, the spring perch is as close to the centre as it can get.

Don't rule out patrol as they appear to be an easy fit , very cheap.
4.6 ratio is most common i think.

Doesnt matter how strong the diff is, converting to SPOA is illegal in QLD.

I'm sure there are other diffs that also have SPOA configurations but Im not aware of any of them being approved in QLD in zooks. That doesnt mean it hasnt happened just I dunno of any.

Thats why you also seem to face enormous issues converting a leaf sprung set of axles to a coil over arrangement, easpecially if the diffs are from something else.

For instance converting a Vitara to SAS using coils with Hilux (leaf) diffs seems to be "unapprovable" but using bundera (coil) diffs is ok.

remember since we're only allowed 15mm bigger tyres up here it's all theoretical ;)

Hiluxs come SPOA (some) from factory though so i think it has something to do with the fact that thats more legal as the srirngs have a legal area to bolt onto etc.???

Or i could be very worng....

For QLD because the Hilux comes SPOA from the factory, it's not an SPOA "conversion". It's the way to get around the illegality of SPOA conversions in QLD.

For other states where SPOA conversions are not an issue from an engineering perspective I'd probably recommend MQ diffs (despite the lower likelihood of finding LSD/lockers).

Do MQ diffs line up in a WT or do they have to be converted to fit?

Hilux rear is centred same as Vitara rear :finger:

have u ever measured the difference?

i would be suprised if it is over 20mm
plus u can get about 25mm out of shaving the toy diffs

look 13 posts up :?

if the rear dosent line up its not hard to put perches on

The hilux spoa swap thing has been closed I'm pretty sure...... can't do that anymore. Search around the board its been discussed many times.

Choc_E sounds like you have plans for this zook :D Shame your thread has gone off the rails :?

I would go for bigger diffs. I put wt's in my nt and regret not going for bigger diffs. I think if you bound up zook diffs on 33's with that power something would give

How much was your yj kit :?: Have you installed it or got pics :?:

Yes it's about 20mm which is the rough equivalent of a 2" smaller tyre which means you may need to go to a bigger tyre which is very hard to legaly do in QLD hence my statement

Well, what can i say?

Things ahve drifted from the topic quite a bit. I don't seem to b much wiser on the matter. The poll results say go hilux; the posts however don't seem to reflect this. People seem to be telling me to go with MQ, but the diff gears arent interchangeable! I still dont like nissans and I cant see the advantages (except that some peole seem to have some to sell, how much by the way? ljxtreem)

Mick - why is it that you think hilux is out? you agreed that I need bigger diffs but what to do?

Has anyone got hilux diffs legal in queensland? Not that I'm worried, the motor wont be, so why stop there.

Are there any other makes of vehecles worth looking at?
Pajero, feroza etc.....

I'm still erring u

Sorry,

I'm still erring towards toyota, mainly because i would prefer them to nissan and there arent really any other options.
